CM Punk Wants to Work With John Cena Again In the DCU

One of the most exciting aspects of a burgeoning cinematic universe like the DCU is the opportunity for new actors, filmmakers, and creatives in general to step into the larger-than-life worlds of iconic comic book characters. The newfound stardom of David Corenswet, and the endless rumors of who the next Batman will be are just two of the biggest examples. What’s more interesting is the unconventional choices for actors, and the ones who find themselves excited by the idea of joining something like the DCU. Now, C.M. Punk is one of the latest to express such interest, especially in the case of working again with fellow wrestler and Peacemaker actor John Cena.

In an exclusive interview with MovieWeb, CM Punk was asked if he would ever want to work with Cena again. The duo had an intense rivalry in the WWE prior to Cena’s retirement, with the chemistry between the two and their contrasting personalities leading to entertaining matches. CM Punk told us that he would be more than open to collaborating with Cena, mentioning the actor’s work as Peacemaker in the DCU and his willingness to be a part of that world:

“Oh, I would be a fool to say it, didn’t, you know, I think me and John are going to work together again. I don’t know when, I don’t know where, I don’t know for who, you know, James Gunn’s busy doing this whole DC thing, and it feels like John is a big part of that, and Peacemaker is excellent. So, you know, roles are oftentimes enough. So James Gunn is like a booker, right? Like he’s gonna have a vision for certain characters and certain people, if I ever fit one of those visions, man, I’ll do what I can to make sure I can secure the role.”

Dark Sky Film

CM Punk’s answer is an exciting and mature one. Rather than name-dropping a specific character which would lead to endless headlines and speculation, the wrestler and actor seems to have a fundamental understanding of how James Gunn’s casting process works. DC Studios co-chairmen James Gunn and Peter Safran have had a creative philosophy that puts story and writing at the forefront of everything else, with casting and specific creative decisions involving production coming only after a script is set. CM Punk’s comments on only wanting to be a part of that world should he fit the vision of any given character feels in line with what came before.

Peacemaker season 2 ended on an ominous note for John Cena’s titular character, though the dimension that he has ended up stranded in will likely play a larger role in the overall story of the DCU. CM Punk’s desire to work with Cena again could result in the wrestler playing a similarly underutilized/overlooked comic book character, especially since Gunn has already shown an affinity for casting wrestlers-turned-actors as obscure characters who ultimately become popular thanks to these projects. Should the right character and script come along, CM Punk may get the John Cena reunion he’s been waiting for.
