Prime Video’s Saucy R-Rated Thriller Is Your Next Scandalous Binge-Watch

Prime Video is hiding one of the raunchiest and most scandalous thrillers in recent years. The series was heavily slept on when it released in late 2025. Despite boasting a strong cast, which included Robin Wright and House of the Dragon‘s Olivia Cooke, and a great premise, the series underperformed on the streamer’s chart. However, with the likes of Heated Rivalry currently dominating on HBO Max, and R-rated thrillers making a comeback (thanks to the likes of The Voyeurs, The Handmaiden, and The Hunting Wives), now is the perfect time to binge the six-episode thriller, The Girlfriend, on Prime Video.

The Girlfriend is streaming on Prime Video. Based on the novel of the same name by Michelle Frances, the series stars Olivia Cooke as Cherry, the eponymous girlfriend. After falling in love with Daniel (Laurie Davidson), the meeting of the parents goes even worse than you’d expect. Daniel’s father, Howard (Waleed Zuaiter), may approve of Cherry, but his overbearing mother, Laura (Robin Wright), takes over-protectiveness to a new level. The series also stars Karen Henthorn, Tanya Moddie, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Anna Chancellor, and Naomi Sheldon. The official synopsis reads:

“Laura’s picture-perfect life starts to unravel when her son brings home a new girlfriend named Cherry; she becomes convinced that Cherry is a manipulative social climber, or is she just being paranoid?”

The Girlfriend was a decent critical hit when it was released in late 2025. The series boasts an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Users (the few who actually watched the series) mostly enjoyed it, giving The Girlfriend a 71% user score. IMDb users held a similar opinion, as the series holds an overall rating of 7.2.

Will ‘The Girlfriend’ Return for Season 2?

The Girlfriend might not have blown streaming records out of the water, but the series still made a dent on the streaming charts. Unfortunately, Prime Video, like most streamers, doesn’t release exact viewing figures for its programming, so we’ll never know exactly how successful the series was. However, fans are hoping the show made enough of an impression on the bigwigs at Amazon Prime Video for it to be renewed for a second season.

At the time of writing, The Girlfriend hasn’t yet been renewed for Season 2. Michelle Frances has written several more novels in the same style as The Girlfriend. However, none of them are direct sequels or continuations. So, should the series move ahead with Season 2, it would be without a novel blueprint. But, given the shocking ending to the first season (which we won’t spoil here), we’re all desperate to see the continuation of Daniel and Cherry’s story.

But any attempts at an off-novel Season 2 could also ruin that cliffhanger ending. With access to information and entertainment easier than ever, it seems as though audiences have forgotten about the art of an open-ended ending. The Girlfriend‘s finale is twist-filled, shocking, and leaves you wanting more. But maybe that’s the point. Maybe the series shouldn’t get a second season, and the mystery of the ending should be preserved.
