Maxima is Rumored for ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Appearance After Wonder Woman Rumor Debunk

With James Gunn shutting down rumors that Wonder Woman would appear in Man of Tomorrow, speculation has already turned to the female character that seems to be in the casting process for James Gunn’s Superman follow-up. Man of Tomorrow is set to open in theaters on Jul. 9, 2027, and with filming set to begin in spring 2026, fans are looking for any details they can get about the plot of the next entry in the DCU. A female supporting character that was described as “warrior-like” and a “certain height requirement” led many to guess Wonder Woman, but Gunn seems to be casting another DC heroine, one who also can work as a villain.

Nexus Point News is reporting that the female character in Man of Tomorrow will be the alien warlord Maxima. Nexus Point News says that Maxima will be the secondary antagonist of Man of Tomorrow, alongside Brainiac, before changing sides and joining the heroes. Naturally, there has been no official comment from DC Studios yet.

Who is Maxima, and How Could She Fit Into ‘Man of Tomorrow’

Maxima from DC Comics
DC Comics

Maxima was created by writer Roger Stern and artist George Pérez and first appeared in Action Comics #645 from September 1989. Maxima is the oldest child of the royal family of the planet Almerac, who seeks a mate and eventually sets her sights on Superman. While originally an antagonist, the character has since become an ally of Superman and was even briefly on the Justice League. A new, younger version of Maxima debuted in DC’s New 52 reboot in Supergirl #36 from January 2015, becoming a Supergirl ally but also establishing her as a lesbian, making her an outcast on her planet.

Maxima reluctantly teamed up with Man of Tomorrow villain Brainiac in the 1992 storyline “Panic in the Sky“, before eventually turning on him and becoming a member of the Justice League. If Maxima and Brainiac are both in Man of Tomorrow, it is entirely possible that James Gunn’s upcoming Superman follow-up could take inspiration from that particular comic. While ‘Panic in the Sky‘ saw Superman and the Justice League fight off Brainiac, the DCU film could unite Superman with the likes of the Justice Gang, Supergirl, Lobo, and maybe even Peacemaker.

The idea of Maxima in Man of Tomorrow should be taken with a grain of salt at this time, especially as the rumor of her character appearing only emerged following Gunn’s direct denial that Wonder Woman would be in Man of Tomorrow. Gunn said, “Scoopers are taking a stab at guessing [Wonder Woman],” when they saw news of a female character joining the cast of Man of Tomorrow. Now it appears Maxima is the next character to be thrown out into the world as a possible candidate. Maxima’s connection to Brainiac should have led people to guess her first instead of Wonder Woman, but rumors went to the bigger name rather than the one that potentially fits with the known plot of the movie. As always, only time – or a response from Gunn – with tell.
