Marvel Boss Suggests 2025 Series ‘Marvel Zombies’ May Not Be Dead After All

Marvel Boss Suggests 2025 Series ‘Marvel Zombies’ May Not Be Dead After All

Don’t get too excited just yet — maybe even whisper it as you read — but a second season of Marvel Zombies might actually be happening. Premiering on streaming platform Disney+ last September and consisting of four episodes, its adult-oriented chaos places itself in Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, alongside Eyes of Wakanda, Daredevil: Born Again, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars (among a multitude of other titles). Marvel Zombies spins off from an episode of What If…? where a virus transformed the majority of Earth’s population, including the Avengers, into flesh-eating walkers.

Everyone from Florence Pugh, to Iman Vellani, to Randall Park, to Simu Liu, to Elizabeth Olsen, Tessa Thompson, and Paul Rudd reprised their MCU characters for the animated project, yet despite the show reportedly doing awesome numbers, it was launched as a one-season event. But now, Marvel Studios’ head of streaming, television and animation, Brad Winderbaum, has suggested via the Official Marvel Podcast that the creative cogs are turning once again.

“I’ll tell you this, since I’m the first episode of the year, we’re developing a few things right now behind the scenes. Obviously, nothing’s been green lit yet, but we are actively developing the next zombie story. So, fingers crossed. It’s not official, but [showrunner Bryan Andrews is] back in the house and we’re starting to talk about ideas. The little bit I’ve heard so far is incredible.”

‘Marvel Zombies’ Ending Begs for More Exploration

As one MovieWeb writer contemplated in this piece, the open-ended conclusion of Marvel Zombies does insinuate that there’s plenty more to come from this zombie-scape. At the very end of the fourth episode, Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel suddenly awakens in her New York bedroom, despite seemingly battling hordes of demons just a second ago. She considers the possibility that Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch may have manipulated reality back to normality, yet she’s soon snapped out of that idea when Riri Williams/Ironheart removes her from this illusion and informs the young superhero that she’s hacked the system and that everything she’s seen is fake.

The fact that Marvel Zombies ends on this ambiguous note is cause for optimism, right? And Winderbaum’s interview only solidifies this.

One thing that went against Marvel Zombies‘ immediate renewal was the lukewarm critical reaction. A review from RobertEbert.com included: “Marvel Zombies may be a light watch, but the lack of guts it had to take the MCU roster to new heights is squandered by tonal stale safeness disguised as freshness”, although Bloody Disgusting did go on to write: “Four episodes of gonzo, out of control brain-chomping, limb-ripping, body-blasting carnage that turns Marvel’s standard super-powered theatrics into a disturbing dystopia that celebrates horror’s desire to disrupt.”
