KPop Demon Hunters is the biggest movie to have ever been released on Netflix, and following its recent Golden Globes win, the animated musical adventure is back in the Top 5 on Netflix in the U.S.
When it was released in June without much fanfare, it seemed that the Sony Animation movie would just become another run-of-the-mill straight-streaming offering that would attract a little attention before fading into obscurity. Seven months later, the movie has not been out of the Netflix Top 10, had two successful limited theatrical runs, earned spells at the top of the music charts around the world, and become the most-watched movie in Netflix history.
They are not the most impressive stats KPop Demon Hunters boasts either, as the film holds a 93% Tomatometer score from 99 reviews, and a near-perfect 99% score on the audience Popcornmeter. In short, from being a movie that Sony passed onto Netflix as part of their ongoing content deal, KPop Demon Hunters has become the biggest movie in the world.
Since its release, the movie, which tells the story of a K-Pop trio who double as demon hunters but must face challenges from within their group as well as without, has garnered over 100 nominations across numerous movie and music awards events, and walked away with 83 wins at the time of writing. This includes picking up the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Animated and Best Original Song – Motion Picture for “Golden.” The movie is competing in five categories at the Grammy Awards on February 1, including nominations for Song of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and has a nomination in the Best Original Song category at the Oscars in March.
‘KPop Demon Hunters 2’ Will Expand the Franchise…in 2029
Like any unexpected hit, KPop Demon Hunters has very quickly set a sequel in motion, but as there was no such follow-up planned, fans are going to have to wait a long time to see Huntrix members Rumi, Mira, and Zoey face in their next adventure. While it seems that 2029 is a long way off, this is a pretty swift turnaround for an animated feature film.
To put it in context, Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse had a five-year gap, with the third movie, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse set to release in 2027, four years after its predecessor. However, Disney took nine years to follow up 2016’s Zootopia, six years to release Frozen 2, and eight years to release 2024’s Moana 2. That puts KPop Demon Hunters‘ four-year journey to its sequel pretty much expected.
In the meantime, fans are clearly not letting go of the movie, keeping it in the Netflix chart with the last several weeks delivering 9 million views per week – that is more than the 7.7 million received by Jim Carrey’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas over the main festive holiday weeks. Having seemingly secured its place as the most-watched Netflix movie for the foreseeable future, probably the only movie that can break its many records will be KPop Demon Hunters when it arrives in 2029.
