Whether the snow, slush, and cold wind of January are starting to get you down (or you live in a warm place but still wish it were spring), everyone needs a fun TV distraction. Hulu has some incredible comedies, from the cozy vibes of Only Murders in the Building to the darker and more emotional kitchen adventures on The Bear. While the streaming service, which is merging with Disney+ in 2026, may not have as many thrillers as Netflix, Tell Me Lies is one of its most compelling shows.
The series is adapted from Carola Lovering’s novel, which was published in 2018. It’s a fantastic book adaptation that captures the vivid characters and strong emotions depicted on the page, although with some big changes that, for the most part, work well. So, while deciding what thriller to watch next, Tell Me Lies should be a top choice.

Tell Me Lies is a thriller series made for binge-watching, and since Season 1 has 10 episodes and Season 2 has 8, you can get through it fairly quickly. Season 1 blends a longer storyline about a mysterious death with the shocking and steamy relationship between Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White) and Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten). Season 2 adds even more wild twists, but keeps the focus on this terrible dynamic.
Like the impressive Crave series Heated Rivalry, Tell Me Lies doesn’t shy away from sex scenes. In both cases, these scenes move the story forward, reveal vulnerabilities in the main characters, and allow the show to ask questions about emotional and physical intimacy. The Hulu thriller doesn’t forget about character development, though, and that’s where it really shines. Lucy is sympathetic one minute and unlikable the next, and her best friends, Pippa (Sonia Mena) and Bree (Catherine Missal), are just as complex and nuanced as she is.
Along with the steamy moments, Tell Me Lies has plotlines about grief, families who struggle to speak to each other, and the universal wish to be beloved, cool, and popular. The series also deserves some praise for telling a relatable story about college life. Other shows have tried and, honestly, failed to explore this time period. The characters on nostalgia-inducing teen series like Gossip Girl and Beverly Hills, 90210 were already basically twentysomethings when they were supposed to be in high school, so those latter seasons feel like more of the same. Most people probably (and thankfully) didn’t have college relationships that were quite as dramatic as Lucy and Stephen’s. However, many can relate to the heartbreak, pain, and intense emotions that Lucy experiences.
It was also smart to set the story in the 2000s, as this forces the characters to interact with each other more in person than online or on social media. They use flip phones that aren’t much fun, and when they want to talk to someone, they usually march over to their dorm room or apartment. Watching the show is kind of like going back to a simpler time without so much reliance on technology… although, of course, no one would really want to live Lucy’s intense life.
Tell Me Lies tells a gripping thriller story that moves across various timelines, and the twists and cliffhangers will keep anyone engaged. However, it’s also a serious show about the dangers of falling for someone who turns on the charm, but treats their partner poorly. Tell Me Lies Season 3 is one of the most exciting January 2026 Hulu releases, with Episodes 1 through 3 streaming on Jan. 13th, 2026, and episodes 4 through 8 dropping every Tuesday until mid-February.
