Newcastle fighting to sign Mateus Mane – Report

Newcastle may have the money to do business this month, but it’s been made clear that we’ll only pursue the right player at the right price, which isn’t always easy in January.

Long-term planning remains a key part of our focus in the world of PSR, with recent reports suggesting new sporting director Ross Wilson is keen to recruit more young gems who can become top player under Eddie Howe’s guidance.

One player who fits that mould is Mateus Mane: the Portuguese-born sensation who has burst onto the scene at Wolves over the past few weeks.

The 18-year-old attacker has shone since breaking into Rob Edwards’ side, scoring brilliant goals in Wolves’ 3-0 win over West Ham and again in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw at Everton.

This brings us to news of Newcastle’s interest, with The Mail reporting that Newcastle are one of the Premier League clubs who are keen to ‘strike an early deal’ for the talented teenager.

Newcastle are believed to be big admirers, but they face a real fight for his signature, with plenty of rival interest from other Premier League clubs and Wolves determined to keep the youngster.

The Mail state that Wolves insist he is ‘not for sale at any price’ this month, consider a January sale ‘off limits’ despite the fact they look almost certain to spend next season in the Championship.

Arsenal, Man City and Spurs have all been linked to the England Under-18 international, who can play as an attacking midfielder, winger or up front.

Speaking after his first Premier League goal against West Ham, Mane said: “I’ve always thought I’m fearless, I’m not scared of anything and I feel like I deserve to be here.

“It’s always a dream to play in the Premier League and you have to take it. I have to keep working, getting the ball and driving at players, it’s what I do.”
