Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone Sequel Quietly Changes Its Name

Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone Sequel Quietly Changes Its Name

Yellowstone‘s first spinoff sequel quietly changes its name ahead of its premiere. After dominating on Paramount Network, the Yellowstone franchise is officially coming to CBS with its very first sequel series. Set after the events of the main show, Y: Marshals will follow Kayce Dutton as his story continues separate from Beth and Rip, who is settling in their new ranch far from their original home base.

As part of the 2025-2026 TV cycle, Y: Marshals is set to debut on March 1, 2026. There’s a lot of buzz surrounding the show, as it is a departure from Kayce’s story in Yellowstone. Instead, it’s more of him revisiting his solo endeavors before eventually having to come back to the Dutton Ranch. The show’s cast is a mix of new and familiar faces, further piquing the interest of viewers.

That said, several weeks before it launches, Y: Marshals quietly changes its name to just Marshals (via THR). When the outlet asked a spokesperson from CBS, they revealed that internally, the “Y” was “always considered silent.” They added that despite the change, the “Y,” which was also the branding for the Duttons’ Montana ranch, will remain as the show’s official logo.

Interestingly, the report did a deep dive into what might have motivated the title change, especially this late in the process of getting the show up and running. Marketing for the show has used the name Y: Marshals up until this change, and there’s a theory that this recourse has something to do with Sheridan eventually moving away from Paramount and transferring to NBCUniversal. When that happens, he will have to leave the whole Yellowstone legacy.

Per the outlet, the same CBS rep denied that the name change had anything to do with the aforementioned impeding changes concerning Sheridan. They re-emphasized that “all press stories already reference Marshals‘ connection to Yellowstone.” In any case, it would be difficult to separate Kayce’s story from Yellowstone, considering that he is a descendant of the Duttons. So even with the title change, viewers know how he is tied to the main franchise.

As per the narrative implications of this last-minute alteration, it’s safe to say that there isn’t any. Y: Marshals (or Marshals) has finished shooting, at least its earlier episodes. If it has any impact on its storytelling moving forward, it will be through future plots, assuming that it gets renewed for a sophomore year. For now, the show’s focus is on Kayce as he moves on from the events of Yellowstone and carves his own path separate from his biological family.
