In recent years, Apple TV has proven itself a titan when it comes to sci-fi titles, and it’s really the only streamer that should adapt the iconic video game Cyberpunk 2077 for the screen. Apple TV’s sci-fi catalog is nothing short of stellar, with the likes of Pluribus, Silo, and the upcoming cyberpunk series Neuromancer, putting the streaming service on the map. However, there is one video game adaptation that players have been keen to see in development for a while, and although there are several worthy contenders to create it, Apple TV is the most logical choice to turn Cyberpunk 2077 into a TV show.
Video game movie adaptations are becoming increasingly popular as of late, especially sci-fi titles. For example, Split Fiction received a movie deal shortly after the game’s release, and A Minecraft Movie was a huge hit, too. While adapting Cyberpunk 2077 would be quite the challenge for Apple TV, considering the game’s complicated lore and lengthy play time, it’s the one streaming service that could likely pull it off.
Why Apple TV Should Adapt ‘Cyberpunk 2077’
It’s worth noting that there is already a Cyberpunk TV show: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which is an animated Netflix production. However, Edgerunners is set one year before the events of Cyberpunk 2077, focuses on an array of new characters, and is simply set in the same fictional universe. There is yet to be a direct adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077‘s main story, or even a title that includes notable characters from the game, like Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Silverhand.
The characters from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners are mentioned in Cyberpunk 2077. However, this was only included in an update after the Netflix show was released, and so they weren’t actually a part of Cyberpunk 2077 at the time.
An adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077 that stays true to its source material will be a difficult feat. There are so many story options within the game that Apple TV would have to choose between, and multiple romances and deaths in the game are circumstantial, which would make scripting the cyberpunk TV show even harder to do. However, following the success Apple TV has had with Pluribus recently, it’s clear that the streaming service can handle such a task. In fact, considering the show’s overall quality, it can be assumed that Pluribus Season 2 will have an even higher production budget, so why couldn’t a Cyberpunk 2077 adaptation be the same?
Apple TV’s Neuromancer proves that one of the service’s strengths is definitely cyberpunk stories, and this is apparent even before its release later this year. There are other streaming services that could attempt this adaptation, granted, and probably do a good job. Netflix would be another potential contender, considering they’re behind Edgerunners, but no other service has demonstrated an ability to produce such high-quality sci-fi programming like Apple TV has.
While it’s unlikely we’ll get a Cyberpunk 2077 adaptation anytime soon, as it’ll require a lot of production planning and the availability of Keanu Reeves (otherwise players would be in uproar over his absence), it’s not impossible. Apple TV continues to dominate the sci-fi genre, and there doesn’t seem to be any signs of it slowing down any time soon, so perhaps gamers and viewers alike will see a Cyberpunk 2077 adaptation on the horizon in the near future.
