The finale of Stranger Things may not have been a complete success, but you would be hard-pressed to find a more satisfying moment than Winona Ryder‘s Joyce Byers dropping the series’ only planned F-Bomb as she decapitates Vecna. In the final battle, a wounded Vecna almost appears to be begging for death inside the corpse of the Mind Flayer and Joyce is more than happy to oblige, telling him he “f*cked with the wrong family” before hacking off his head with an ax.
While some viewers have questioned the Duffer brothers’ previous comments about Season 5, including one of the most violent deaths of the entire series, there is a good chance that Venca’s demise is what they were talking about. The brutal moment is emphasized with every blow, including a flashback to the many characters who died as a result of Hawkins’ collision with the Upside Down, but for Ryder, it was not a scene that required multiple takes. She told Tudum:
“I love Jamie [Campbell Bower] so much. I remember when he was in that position and we were talking about bands, and he’s the most lovely person. I came in that day just for that. You can’t rehearse a scene like that. You just have to sort of save it for the take. I think I only did it twice.”
Why the Duffers Gave Joyce ‘Stranger Things’ Only F-Bomb
Although it seems hard to believe, Stranger Things only includes one scripted F-bomb in its entire five seasons, although it has been said once before when the Duffers did not really plan for it to be used. Matt Duffer said:
“We haven’t used the F-word in the show, and we’ve been looking for a moment for it. I think Dacre [Montgomery, who played Billy] muttered it without us wanting him to in Season 3’s ‘The Sauna Test’ [Episode 4]. So I guess this technically doesn’t count as the first time, but we were looking for a real moment that would deserve stronger language and we’ve been saving it and felt like, well, if we’re going to go there, this is the moment for it. Let’s give it to Winona.”
When it came to who finally killed Vecna, there was only really one person the Duffers could think to choose. Wanting to make the “most emotional decapitation in history” made it a no brainer. As Ross Duffer told Variety:
“She is sort of the mother of this group, the protector. And also, we never got to see her hit anything with that ax, so that felt like such a satisfying way to deliver the final blow to Vecna. But it was in editorial really, where, as we were working on it, that we had the initial flashbacks to her remembering back to Bob, and building up that anger. It felt right that it’s just not just a ‘fuck yeah’ moment. It was also, in a way, a cathartic moment for our characters, who are purging all this trauma that’s been caused here. It’s not just a stand-up and cheer moment. It’s remembering that this evil has caused them so much pain.”
