Red Dead Redemption 2 might be an emotionally draining and at times laboriously slow experience, but it’s also one of the very best video games of all time. I’m not sure any other game has quite managed to combine story, graphics, and open-world gameplay quite like Rockstar’s 2018 masterpiece.
There’s also the chance you feel you’ve seen and done everything Red Dead Redemption 2 has to offer at this point. While that seems unlikely, given this game is still capable of surprises, you might be looking for new ways to experience and engage with Arthur Morgan’s sad cowboy simulator. Fortunately, there’s a way to do that — and it doesn’t require a single mod.

Obviously, one of the quickest ways to breathe some new life into Red Dead Redemption 2 is to simply install mods. There are tons of Red Dead Redemption 2 mods out there that introduce new areas, new ways to play, and all sorts of other fun things. But this remains maddeningly exclusive to PC gamers, so not all of us can play this way.
The good news is there are two very simple tricks that totally and completely transform Red Dead Redemption 2 into a brand-new game.
The first is to go into your settings and turn off the game’s mini-map. It’s an incredibly simple change, but one that injects an entirely different vibe into the game, making an already immersive world so much more engaging. If you thought you were paying attention to the stunning enviroments before, just wait until you have to actually engage with landmarks and signposts to get around. It’s a game-changer.

“It’s like driving without GPS: by giving up someone holding your hand, you end up living by the feel of the surrounding land,” one user named trampolinebears wrote on the RDR2 subreddit some time ago. “Someone in camp gave me a task at Emerald Ranch, so I just hopped on my horse and went there, because I know my way there from anywhere. The process of feeling your way around the world results in knowing the world.”
It also gives you a much better appreciation for the sheer level of detail Rockstar Games put into Red Dead Redemption 2.
“The game is better-suited for this kind of play than you might think,” trampolinebears continued. “The sun and shadows tell you the compass directions, the mountains and rivers in the distance are unique enough that you know which way you’re facing at a glance, smoke rises into the sky from camps and towns, birds flee from people and predators nearby, encounters worth investigating tend to make noise. You get used to looking around the woods, so you notice the little details.”

While turning off the mini-map is a great new way to play on its own, I’d also suggest another small change: play entirely in first-person mode. It’s not the most popular option, but it’s possible to switch from third-person to first-person at the push of a button in Red Dead Redemption 2, and if you combine this with no mini-map, you’ll find yourself in an entirely different video game.
