‘House of the Dragon’ Showrunner Confirms Series Ending

House of the Dragon fans have been waiting a long time for Season 3 to come around, and they are still waiting for a release date. Ahead of that, showrunner Ryan Condal has recently reminded everyone that the Game of Thrones prequel series will be coming to an end with its fourth season.

Fans were given the most fleeting look at the upcoming season in HBO Max’s montage video of what is coming to the platform in 2026, which will first see another Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, debut on January 18. Speaking about the upcoming slate, Francesca Orsi, EVP, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said:

“We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the Game of Thrones universe. Together, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R. R. Martin’s universe continues to be. In January, I think audiences will be delighted by the inspiring underdog tale of Dunk and Egg that George and Ira Parker have so beautifully captured. And this Summer, House of the Dragon is set to ignite once again with some of its most epic battles yet.”

While making an appearance on the Escape Hatch podcast, Condal was discussing the classic movie, The Maltese Falcon, when he was asked about his work on House of the Dragon, which he called a “long, long, long shoot.” He then noted that they were “doing six day weeks from August to the end, just to finish on time so that the post schedule wasn’t touched because it takes so long to make these goddamn dragons.” He then added:

“Now also knowing there’s only one more left to go and feeling we can leave it all out on the field because we’ve started the writing process for Season 4, which will be the last one.”

‘House of the Dragon’s Ending Will Not Mean ‘Game of Thrones’ Fans Will Be Missing the Franchise

Condal has not really told us anything that we didn’t already know, as he revealed that Season 4 would bring the series to an end back in August 2024. However, as one series ends, more could well be on the way.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will debut in a couple of weeks, and will be followed by a second season in 2027. Additionally, author George R.R. Martin has said that there are now once again several other Game of Thrones projects being worked on, including prequels and sequels to the original eight-season show. While Martin has not divulged exactly which characters or families from the franchise will be returning for these new shows, it is clear that there are still a lot more stories to be told…provided, of course, that Warner Bros. potential new owners, Netflix, want to make them. It’s hard to imagine there being any push back from that direction.
