Vin Diesel’s Fan-Favorite Sci-Fi Action Franchise Hits New Streaming Home (Just in Time for the Long-Awaited Sequel)

Action movie icon Vin Diesel leaves his Fast and Furious family behind and goes it alone in what’s now considered one of his best franchises. While the actor is best-known for his role as racer-turned-secret agent Dominic Toretto, arguably his most interesting character is the sci-fi antihero Richard B. Riddick, with every live-action adventure featuring the outlaw (so far, at least) set to land on a new streaming home in the new year.

Riddick was the breakout role for Diesel, with the character first appearing in the oddly divisive action, sci-fi, horror flick Pitch Black back in 2000. Before revving audiences’ engines as Dom, Diesel proved his talents as a leading man with the mysterious Riddick, a prison convict who finds himself stranded on an alien planet after the spaceship he’s hitching a ride on crash-lands. Unfortunately for the crew, this planet harbors deadly creatures that come out at night. Thankfully, Riddick can see really well in the dark.

Directed by David Twohy, Pitch Black became a cult hit thanks to its throwback approach, heart-racing terror and, most of all, Diesel’s star-making performance. The franchise has since expanded the lore far beyond what anyone expected, with the sequel, 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick, revealing that Riddick is the last of the Furyans, an “elder race” known for their physical and mental strength.

The last audiences saw of Riddick was in 2013’s Riddick, which takes things back to basics and follows the eponymous character alone again and fighting for survival against alien predators and vengeful mercenaries. While every movie in the Riddick franchise has received mixed reactions, it remains a firm fan-favorite, with Diesel set to bring Riddick back for a long-awaited fourth outing soon.

‘Riddick 4’ Is Happening Right Now

That’s right, Riddick 4 is now happening. Recently, Diesel has taken to social media to share several images and even footage from the set of Riddick 4, which will be titled Riddick: Furya. Set to be written and directed once again by David Twohy, the sci-fi action sequel will find Diesel back as the iconic character, with a synopsis for Riddick: Furya revealing clues regarding the plot…

“Riddick finally returns to his home world, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.”

Not only that, but Diesel has also teased the expansion of the Riddick franchise, taking to Instagram to share what appears to be concept art for something titled “The Riddick Universe.” Showing off hoverbikes amid various sci-fi-looking vistas, this is not the first time the actor has hinted at a shared universe, saying last year, “The Riddick universe is expanding… so cool. Inspired.”

Before any of that, audiences can remind themselves why Riddick has become a sci-fi icon in the decades since when Pitch Black, The Chronicles Of Riddick, and Riddick hit Peacock on January 1, 2026.
