Gerard Butler has become a bankable action star in the last decade, and one of his best movies ended up being a riff on the end of the world that is now blasting its way up the HBO Max chart ahead of the release of its long-awaited sequel in January. The movie in question is Greenland, which sees Butler teaming up with Morena Baccarin to try and survive a global apocalypse.
Greenland was released in 2020 after several Covid pandemic delays. While the film was released in theaters in some territories, it was only released via VOD services in the U.S. and subsequently streamed on HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video. The film therefore did not get a fair crack at the box office, but still managed to gross $52.3 million against its $35 million budget. The film’s synopsis reads:
“John Garrity, his estranged wife and their young son embark on a perilous journey to find sanctuary as a planet-killing comet hurtles toward Earth. Amid terrifying accounts of cities getting leveled, the Garrity’s experience the best and worst in humanity. As the countdown to the global apocalypse approaches zero, their incredible trek culminates in a desperate and last-minute flight to a possible safe haven.”
Audiences have now been streaming Greenland in numbers, sending it surging up the HBO Max chart past to number four at the time of writing.
‘Greenland 2: Migration’ Arrives in Theaters in January
While Greenland may not have been given a fair chance to make an impression in cinemas, the sequel will have a shot at securing a decent box office this January, as Greenland 2: Migration is released on January 9, 2026.
The sequel picks up the story five years after the apocalypse as the Garrity family leave the safety of the Greenland bunker in order to search for a new home in the wreckage of Europe. The film sees Butler and Baccarin reprising their roles, while the role of their on-screen son is played by Roman Griffin Davis, who replaces Roger Dale Floyd. Even before the sequel hits cinemas, producer Sébastien Raybaud has already teased a possible third installment of the franchise if they can work out a story. He said previously:
“We wrapped in July and I saw a first cut this past week, which is great. It’s a great achievement for the filmmakers involved. It’s a $90M film and exactly the type we want to see more of in Europe. We’re thinking about what could happen afterwards. There’s something that happens in 2 that could be tricky, but I’m sure we can find a way…”
Greenland was hailed as one of Butler’s best movies of the last decade, and that is clearly something that has allowed it to return to the chart ahead of the sequel’s release. If Greenland 2 can balance its $90 million budget with a strong performance in cinemas next month, then it is very likely that we will see more from this franchise in the not too distant future.
