Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 arrived in cinemas on December 5 to a wave of “rotten” critic reviews but incredible praise from audiences, a disparity that is not that uncommon when a movie takes the bold decision to primarily focus on pleasing existing fans of a popular franchise. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 was called a mess and “only made for die-hard fans of the games” in some reviews, and when it comes to fan-service accusations, director Emma Tammi is more than happy to stand by the decision to go all in on pleasing fans of the video game or lose the core audience of the franchise.
Speaking to MovieWeb, Tammi was asked about whether the decision to focus on making a movie that fans would love and many other people would scratch their heads at, Tammi explained that she feels “really proud” of standing by the choice to make FNAF2 for the fans. She said:
“It really was a choice from the get-go to try to really put fan service first and foremost as we were making these films. And it’s tough because that fan service doesn’t always translate to a more general audience. And we knew that going in. I think we wanted to be more specific than general, and we felt like it’s a gamble, but also if we’re not making this movie for the fan base, then we’ve really lost our core. So, it’s really a decision we all stand behind.
I almost take it as a badge of honor that the critic reviews and the audience reviews have like the biggest disparity, I think, in Rotten Tomatoes history or something close to that. I understand a lot of the critique, of course, and I understand and have experienced firsthand the joy and the excitement of the fans watching the movie. So, I hold both things like as very much true and understandable reactions to the film. But at the end of the day, the joy of the fans is so much more important and thrilling than reading a kind of mean movie review headline. So, I think we made the right choice. I feel really proud of what we did.”
‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ Is Now on Digital Platforms
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 delivered a strong box office performance in just over two weeks, jumping straight into the list of the top 25 highest-grossing movies of 2025, and becoming the best performing Blumhouse release since the original Five Nights at Freddy’s in 2023.
Despite its short turnaround time between cinema and digital release, there is certainly no smudge on the record of what the movie has achieved. Taking over $200 million has proven that making the movie for fans has massively paid off, and now we can expect to see the film jumping up VOD charts on platforms like Amazon and Apple Store in the coming days.
Arriving with a host of behind the scenes extras, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 fans can now rent or buy the movie and enjoy the madness and mayhem at home over the festive holidays. What more could you want to make your Christmas go with a creepy bang.
