Sigourney Weaver Talks Sequel to Sci-Fi Comedy ‘Galaxy Quest 2’

Sigourney Weaver has addressed the sequel to Galaxy Quest that was never made. The 1999 cult sci-fi comedy was hugely successful upon release, and though it left things open for a follow-up, attempts at making Galaxy Quest 2 never resulted in anything. Reportedly, there was a series in the works at some point, but news on that front remains quiet.

In a recent interview for Vanity Fair, the Oscar nominee discussed her most memorable characters from a prestigious career. While Weaver is best known for playing Ripley in the Alien franchise, when she breaks down her most iconic roles, Gwen DeMarco from Galaxy Quest stands among her favorites.

“I had really wanted to play Gwen,” the actor says. “Because Gwen is much closer to me than Ripley is. I’ve been so fortunate to work with these great ensembles … Tony Shaloub and Alan Rickman. It was just an amazing group.” Weaver added the following about the sequel that, unfortunately, never came to fruition:

“I remember [co-writer] Bob Gordon had written a second one, and he wouldn’t give it to DreamWorks because he just felt they’d missed the boat on ours. And so we always meant to do a sequel, and then with Alan passing away, we just lost heart. But it was a great privilege to do this love letter to actors.”

Weaver also addressed the long-rumored director’s cut of Galaxy Quest. It is supposedly a film with a different tone, especially because of Alan Rickman’s less “sophisticated” performance: “I wish they put out a director’s cut of the movie because, at the last minute, DreamWorks decided to release the movie with some of the more sophisticated scenes cut that Alan was in because it needed a kids’ movie to go up against Stuart Little. And why they don’t put out the movie again with more of his very, very strange and wonderful scenes?” Perhaps fans of the movie should “never give up, never surrender” hope for this apparently better cut.

‘Galaxy Quest’ Is One of Weaver’s Favorite Roles

Ellen Ripley is, without question, Weaver’s most iconic character. Over the decades, the actor gave life to the fearless member of the Nostromo crew who once dared to step up to the plate and fight the otherworldly xenomorph. It is a performance so iconic in the land of sci-fi that it is still hard to imagine an Alien film without the female hero.

Other memorable performances by the actor include Dana Barrett in the Ghostbusters series, as well as playing Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist, and Janey Carver in The Ice Storm. Nevertheless, when looking through her entire catalog, Gwen DeMarco also stands out. It is a role she still celebrates for what she aimed to achieve and what she ultimately felt for the character:

“I wanted to play a young woman in that world of stardom, who wants so much to be a star and who, because she’s beautiful and bosomy and blonde, no one takes very seriously – not even the commander. And I felt great compassion and sisterhood with Gwen and Tawny [the character she plays in the world of Galaxy Quest].”
