‘Supergirl’ Test Screening Reactions Have Been Mixed for DCU Movie

The trailer for Supergirl received a mixed reception on its debut. It seems that a recent test screening of the movie could be another matter according to scooper Daniel Richtman. The screening, which took place on Tuesday, led Richtman to say he has “heard nothing but good things from several people.” Does this mean that Supergirl will be a super smash hit for DC Studios? Well, as you would expect, there is a big “but” to be factored in.

Naturally, these reports are to be taken with a grain of whatever you like, but while Richtman suggested the film had been well received, fellow insider @Cryptic4KQual, who has often been first on trailer release and runtime leaks, seemed to have heard a very different opinion on the film. They wrote:

“Yes, Supergirl had a test screening. Roughly 2 hours 5 mins. From what I heard, [the] feedback was not that great, but it wasn’t a bad film. Some scenes shined alot more than others. Milly is praised for her acting in the role. Lobo has 2 fights. The villain is underwhelming.”

Conflicting opinions from this kind of screening are not uncommon, and whether they are accurate or not is pretty much irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. This becomes incredibly apparent when considering that Superman had the same kind of reaction, only to deliver some strong reviews and become one of the highest grossing Superman movies.

‘Supergirl’ Can Deliver a Summer Hit for DC Studios, but It Is Not Guaranteed

Superman was a big challenge for James Gunn and Peter Safran as the first movie in their extensive DCU plans. Despite being a reasonable hit, taking more than “rival” summer superhero blockbuster The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the film certainly fell short of some expectations, so can Supergirl really be the movie to boost the DCU’s fortunes?

Supergirl has only previously had one previous big screen outing, and it was anything but successful. Released in 1984, the film starred Helen Slater in the titular role, and despite having a place in the world of DC movies, it only landed a $14 million box office from its $35 million budget.

The DCU’s Supergirl comes with a much higher budget, and that immediately means that the film will need to gross at least as much as Superman to be considered any kind of hit. Of course, James Gunn is not directing this one, but there have been plenty of Guardians of the Galaxy comparisons to see that Supergirl is going to be a very different movie to Superman. Whether that turns out to be a good thing or a detriment will be seen next summer, but considering Gunn’s Guardians movies all performed well at the box office, it surely can’t be a bad thing to be talked about in the same circles as the Marvel movies that turned a bunch of lesser-known characters into household names.

Expect to see more details about Supergirl in the early part of 2026.
