More than three decades since the original exploded onto screens, a Keanu Reeves action thriller classic is getting a sequel. The John Wick star has been an action icon for decades now, and it all started with Point Break, which saw the actor take the lead as Johnny Utah, a strait-laced cop who finds himself shedding the rules and hunting for the next adrenaline high while on the hunt for a small team of elusive bank robbers.

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow and written by W. Peter Iliff, Point Break was released way, way back in 1991 and stars Patrick Swayze, Lori Petty, and Gary Busey alongside Keanu Reeves. The titular term refers to the surfing term “point break,” with Reeves’ FBI agent using the water sport to infiltrate the tight-knit gangs of Southern California surfers that he believes are leading a double life as the “Ex-Presidents,” a band of crooks who don masks of various former presidents.

Now, Point Break is getting a follow-up. Switching the action from the big to the small screen, Deadline reports that the series “is set 35 years after the events of the original film and is focused on a dangerous heist crew with ties to the Ex-Presidents gang.”

AMC has now won the rights to develop the Point Break sequel series following what the report describes as a “highly competitive situation.” The series comes courtesy of David Kalstein, who recently brought the short-lived action thriller series Butterfly, starring Daniel Dae Kim, to life for Prime Video. Kalstein, who is also known for the likes of CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles, will write the Point Break series.

More to come…
