Toni Collette said that she would be more than happy to film another season of Wayward.
During an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley about her new film Goodbye June, Collette explained that, not only is she willing to participate in Wayward season 2, but she has also discussed possible storylines for the hit Netflix series. The actor revealed that she and the show’s creator, Mae Martin, have spoken about revisiting Wayward and potential plots for any future installments.
Collette did admit that she thought any plans for another season of Wayward were slim. However, she still has some hope that it might still come to fruition. And, if the opportunity ever arises, she will be completely on board to reprise her role as Evelyn Wade.
ScreenRant: Toni, I have no segue for this next question. My colleagues love Wayward. It was designed to be a limited series, if I’m not mistaken, but Mae Martin said recently that there could be more story to tell. Do you think that that’s something you would entertain?
Toni Collette: Hell yeah. We had the best time. Are you kidding? And I love Mae, and we’ve talked about potential storylines, but I thought it had been buried, but maybe there is some hope. I don’t know. I would totally do it.
Wayward is a Netflix mystery thriller set in an eerie town called Tall Pines in Vermont. The plot is centered on Tall Pines Academy, a mysterious institution for troubled teens that operates more like a cult than a school. When a new police officer named Alex (Martin) moves to town with his pregnant wife, Laura (Sarah Gadon), he begins to uncover disturbing facts about his wife’s past and the school.
Collette’s character, Evelyn, is the founder of Tall Pines Academy, where she is also the head teacher. At first glance, she appears to be a very charming and warm person. However, once her charismatic social mask slips, she is revealed to be a cruel and unforgiving person. She is also very calculated and will stop at nothing to protect her institution.
According to Netflix, Martin said that they essentially wrote the role for Collette. The creator added that it was surreal to have their “number one choice” to play Evelyn. “Toni is one of those few actors who really understands the joke and can be so dryly funny, but then also absolutely terrifying. She really has presence,” they explained.
Wayward season 1 is available to stream now on Netflix.
