In between delivering genuinely Oscar-worthy performances and performances so corny and over the top that they feel more cringe-inducing than a bad improv show, Nicolas Cage occasionally delivers an action classic. During the 00s, Cage delivered a performance that leaned more towards the tame side in an underrated remake of a 1970s action cult classic. Forget Ghost Rider (and really try to forget its sequel), forget National Treasure, and forget Con Air, because Gone in 60 Seconds is the Nic Cage action movie you need to be watching. But you’d better act fast, because it’s about to leave free streaming.
Gone in 60 Seconds is currently streaming for free on Tubi. However, the film is preparing to make its own daring getaway in the coming days. Gone in 60 Seconds is currently listed on Tubi’s “Leaving Soon” page, meaning time is running out for fans to watch Nic Cage’s divisive action movie for free. However, it won’t be gone as soon as 60 seconds. Tubi, frustratingly, doesn’t always give exact dates as to when movies will leave the streaming platform. We expect Gone in 60 Seconds will disappear from the platform by January 1, 2026. But, to save disappointment, we recommend watching it sooner rather than later.
Directed by Dominic Sena, Gone in 60 Seconds is a loose remake of the 1974 original, directed by H. B. Halicki. In Cage’s remake, the actor stars as Memphis Raines, a retired car thief who must steal fifty cars in one night to save his brother’s life. The film also starred Giovanni Ribisi as his brother Kip, alongside Angelina Jolie, Vinnie Jones, Will Patton, Delroy Lindo, and Christopher Eccleston. The official synopsis reads:
“Randall “Memphis” Raines long ago abandoned his life of crime, but after an ominous visit from an old friend, he finds he has no choice but to return to what he does best — stealing cars — in order to save his brother’s life. It all comes down to one night, 50 cars and a contract.”
‘Gone in 60 Seconds’ Was Slated By Critics (But Audiences Loved It)
Gone in 60 Seconds saw mixed results when it opened in theaters in June 2000. The film was slated by critics, holding a poor Rotten Tomatoes rating of 25%. But, it managed to more-than-double its budget at the box office, raking in $237 million worldwide against a budget of $90 million.
Not only did it make money, but those who turned out in droves to watch the film (mostly) loved it. Gone in 60 Seconds boasts a much stronger RT user rating of 77% from over 250,000 ratings. “This movie was fantastic, one of my favorites growing up. After seeing the terrible rotten tomatoes rating, I felt compelled as an audience member to tell you to watch this. It’s good,” wrote one passionate fan, while another said:
“I loved this movie, and think it’s one of my favorite Nick Cage films. It has high intensity, fast moving storyline that doesn’t feel forced or rushed, the acting is great from everyone.”
