Marvel fans have been anticipating the first teaser for Avengers: Doomsday to hit theaters alongside Avatar: Fire and Ash, and a new report claims that Marvel Studios will be unleashing not one, but four new teasers for Doomsday, with each teaser getting a one-week run in front of Fire and Ash. Knowing how ravenous Marvel fans are for the upcoming movie, this strategy would encourage audiences to come check out Avatar multiple times, if only to catch a glimpse of Doomsday on the biggest screens possible. Of course, given the nature of the fandom, it likely won’t take long for an exclusive teaser to land online, but filming these teasers with a cell phone wouldn’t compare in any way to witnessing the excitement on the big screen.
News of this rollout comes from The Hollywood Reporter, though the outlet revealed that Marvel Studios had no comment. Knowing how quickly unauthorized versions of teasers and trailers land on social media platforms, it’s become the norm for studios to release footage of highly anticipated titles online themselves, ensuring that fans are seeing the highest quality footage possible and earning the most traffic. Whether this means the alternate teases would land online the same day they hit theaters or when their theatrical run ends is yet to be seen.
Audiences got our first direct tease of Doomsday over the summer, as the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps saw Franklin Richards being confronted by Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Audiences, though, only saw the back of the character. The amount of excitement about Doomsday means audiences will likely be happy if they even get different 30-second compilations of characters in ominous reaction shots.
The Fate of the MCU Rests on ‘Doomsday’
No matter how well Avengers: Doomsday performs, the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t going away anytime soon, as it’s far too profitable to pull the plug on for the foreseeable future. However, the movie’s performance will be pivotal in how it guides the future of the franchise.
In the years leading up to Avengers: Endgame, the culmination of the “Infinity Saga,” the potential of the MCU seemed limitless for both movies and TV series. The response to projects since then have been a bit mixed, to say the least. Movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Deadpool & Wolverine were definitive hits, while projects like Eternals, The Marvels, and Captain America: Brave New World have earned mixed responses from critics, audiences, or both.
Since Endgame, Marvel has released more than two dozen live-action projects in the world of movies and TV, while also seeing a variety of projects be reimagined, delayed, or scrapped entirely. The coronavirus pandemic understandably caused significant changes to the development of the MCU, as did the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strike. Signaling how much Marvel wants to win back longtime fans, directors Joe and Anthony Russo return to the franchise with Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, while Downey returns as a new version of Victor Von Doom, as his Tony Stark died in Endgame.
If Doomsday succeeds, Marvel Studios will continue at is current pace, but if it stumbles, the studio will likely reevaluate the series’ trajectory.
