One 4/10 and an impressive 8 – Newcastle player ratings from 2-2 draw in Leverkusen

A night of mixed emotions at the BayArena, as Newcastle United started badly, came back brilliantly and blew what would’ve been a big Champions League away win at Bayer Leverkusen.

Another late goal conceded, although there are positives to take as he showed character and head into Sunday with two wins and two draws in our last four.

Here are our marks out of 10 and comments on each player involved last night:

Aaron Ramsdale (6) – Seemed glued to his line from balls in behind and corners, which left us looking suspect from set pieces once again. Did make a few decent saves, showing his shot-stopping ability, but it was not a convincing all-round display. Passing out from the back helped us in possession, although his inability to command his box is a huge worry heading into Sunday.

Tino Livramento (6) – Tried to give us an outlet down our right and got through plenty of running, although his final ball was mixed and he didn’t always make use of the space he was given. Did a solid job defensively.

Malick Thiaw (6.5) – Caught out in the first half and fortunate not to concede a penalty or see red. But he showed his class with some strong pieces of defending and came close to scoring twice at the other end.

Dan Burn (6) – Struggled with Leverkusen’s counter attacks in the first half and his passing was slack. Aerial ability helped us cope with a few corners, taking responsibility as Ramsdale stayed rooted to his line.

Lewis Hall (7) – Positive and sharp on the ball, with his technical quality standing out in an otherwise sloppy first half from Newcastle. Flashed a low ball across the box in the second half.

Sandro Tonali (4.5) – Below par, both on and off the ball. Beaten to the corner Leverkusen scored from, unusually sloppy on the ball and was slow to react, recover or tracks runs for their late equaliser. Tried to keep going and cover ground, but doesn’t look 100%, which is a concern heading into Sunday.

Bruno Guimaraes (6) – An own goal and slack first half was followed by an improved second 45, as he tried to push us on, always demanded the ball and played some good forward passes. Corners a little wasteful.

Joelinton (5) – Made one important block, but lost the ball cheaply and showed his limitations in possession. Too many attacks broke down with the big man, who felt his groin and was replaced by Miley in the second half.

Harvey Barnes (5.5) – It didn’t really work for him on the right. Shots at goal when cutting in on his left were weak and he struggled to build any quick patterns of play.

Nick Woltemade (6) – Such a quiet first half featured few touches and a couple of loose touches, but his pressing to win the penalty was brilliant and key to spark our comeback. Had a goal-bound shot deflect just wide.

Anthony Gordon (7.5) – Lacked conviction in the first half, then came alive in the second. Another penalty converted confidently, the assist for Miley’s header and so unlucky not to score as his late effort hit the post.

Lewis Miley (8*) – Took a Joelinton knock to see him come on, and it’s perhaps just as well. Gave us a presence, won duels and offered composure on the ball, then arrived in the box late and towered above his man to head in what we hoped would be the winner. It wasn’t to be, but he’ll ne knocking on the door to start on Sunday after that cameo.

Jacob Murphy (6) – Didn’t see much of the ball, but came close to making it 3-1 with a well struck shot on the edge of the box which cracked the post. A few inches inside and it would’ve been a precious away win.

Ramsey (N/A) – On in added time.

Wissa (N/A) – On in the 93rd minute.
