Netflix is set to debut a brand-new horror series based on a classic Gothic novel, continuing the trend of the streaming platform adapting classic literary works. One prominent example is their series The Fall of the House of Usher, created by MIke Flanagan as the last project that was part of his Netflix contract before moving over to Prime Video. Based on various Edgar Allan Poe works, Usher received positive reviews; now, it seems Netflix is repeating that creative process with The Grays, a new iteration of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray.
The upcoming series was first announced in 2024, with Katie Rose Rogers writing the project. Rogers is best known for her work on series such as Supergirl and Fellow Travelers, which makes this new show an exciting new genre for her to explore. Not much is known about The Grays, other than that the modern setting will also explore the beauty industry and revolve around the sibling duo of Basil and Dorian Gray. Given the unsettling nature of the source material, The Grays is a perfect opportunity to make Netflix’s horror television output as impressive as their recent film adaptations, such as Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.
What’s most exciting about this upcoming adaptation is the fact that the themes explored in The Picture of Dorian Gray might be even more relevant than when it was first published. Social class, vanity, and the urge to maintain a certain image of yourself for the public are ideas that feel incredibly timely, especially due to the way social media shapes people’s perception of reality while encouraging users to compare themselves and their own lives to carefully curated images and videos.
‘The Grays’ Has the Makings of a New Netflix Hit
Netflix has had a history of success with literary adaptations in the form of miniseries, such as The Haunting of Hill House, which was also developed by Mike Flanagan and based on the 1959 novel of the same name written by Shirley Jackson. Though Flanagan isn’t involved in any capacity with The Grays, it’s clear that the streaming company is attempting to model this upcoming show off Flanagan’s previous work at Netflix. Currently, The Life of Chuck director is working on several Stephen King adaptations for Amazon Prime Video, as well as the upcoming Exorcist film starring Scarlett Johansson.
There is currently no word on a cast or production start date for The Grays. Netflix also hasn’t offered any official comments or updates on the series, so it’s hard to say how close the adaptation is to being released. Even with all those question marks, the show looks like it could be Netflix’s next big horror television hit, adding a breath of fresh air to a catalog that has more recently been dominated by new films like Frankenstein.
