‘Troll 2’ Is a Streaming Success on Nexflix

‘Troll 2’ Is a Streaming Success on Nexflix

Netflix has unleashed a sequel to one of their (literally) biggest movies of 2022, and it has stomped straight to the top of the Netflix global chart despite being described as a “massive disappointment” compared to its predecessor. While this is the time of Hallmark-style movies dominating the streamer’s top ten, there couldn’t be anything less festive or romantic than Troll 2, but it seems that nothing says Christmas like a gigantic Norwegian monster attacking innocent people.

In 2022, Troll was an unexpected hit on Netflix, telling a story of a huge, ancient troll awakening from centuries of sleep to wreak havoc. The film very quickly became one of the most popular non-English language movies ever to have been released on the platform, which meant that a sequel was quickly put into production. Now, the imaginatively titled Troll 2 is repeating its predecessor’s popularity – at least in viewership.

Troll 2 debuted with a Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score of 58%, which is a long way short of the first movie’s 89%. Audiences have been just as dismissive and brutal with the new movie as they were with Troll three years ago. The first movie has a 50% Popcornmeter score, something that the sequel is going to struggle to match with a wave of terrible reviews leading the way. If you can completely ignore some so-so CGI, and a plot that is not for those who like something watertight and grounded, then Troll 2 may be a good way to spend just over an hour and a half.

The film has plenty of blockbuster moments, and director Roar Uthang explained in a recent interview with SciFi Now that his biggest inspiration came from some classic action movies of the past.

“I think I’d maybe watched the Roland Emmerich Godzilla movie, or Armageddon and Independence Day, those kinds of movies from back then. I was thinking, how could we do that in Norway? What would that be? Then I came across this drawing from a Norwegian artist called Kittelsen, who used to draw lots of troll drawings over 100 years ago. He had drawn one where the troll goes down the main street of Oslo, and I thought it would be really interesting to see what would happen if that happened today – a troll walking down the main street of Oslo. How would the government and the army react?”

Will We Get to See ‘Troll 3’ After Latest Netflix Success?

Still from Troll Netflix

Troll 2’s director returned to helm the sequel to his monster hit, and if he gets the chance, then he would potentially be willing to return for a third monster adventure. During the same interview, Uthang said:

“I would love to expand on the Troll Cinematic Universe. Maybe there’s a troll-ogy in there. I don’t know. We’ll see…”

We will see, indeed, as Netflix doesn’t really care much what the reviews read like if a movie blasts its way up the chart to claim the top spot and stays there for a significant amount of time. If Troll 2 continues to hold the top spot against some more Christmassy challengers, then the “troll-ogy” could be closer than you think.
