Tottenham showed their character to deny Newcastle all three points.
Tottenham captain Cristian Romero rescued a point for under-fire Thomas Frank as they twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at Newcastle United.
Frank had gone into a tricky trip to St James’ Park under huge pressure following an insipid 2-1 home loss to Fulham, and they were on the back foot for the vast majority of the game on Tyneside.
Having frustrated Newcastle for 70 minutes, Tottenham were undone by Newcastle captain and surprise substitute Bruno Guimaraes, who produced a superb finish from the edge of the box to open the scoring.
Romero responded eight minutes later, beating Dan Burn to Mohammed Kudus’ near-post cross to restore parity.
It looked as if Anthony Gordon would prove Newcastle’s match-winner when he emphatically converted from the penalty spot after Rodrigo Bentancur was controversially ruled to have brought down Burn in the area, only for Romero to produce to some injury-time magic as his overhead kick somehow trickled beyond Aaron Ramsdale and into the bottom-right corner.
Both sides remain level on 19 points in the Premier League table, five points outside the top four.
Bruno finds Newcastle breakthrough
Newcastle made a strong start, with Lewis Hall dragging a shot wide and Nick Woltemade heading over before Lewis Miley tested Guglielmo Vicario from the edge of the box.
Joelinton then hit the inside of the post from a tight angle after latching onto a superb pass down the right channel from Jacob Murphy, though Tottenham produced an illustration of their threat when Lucas Bergvall flicked Kudus’ right-wing cross narrowly over the bar.
Eddie Howe brought on Guimaraes for the second half in place of Sandro Tonali, and Newcastle were fast out of the blocks in the second half.
Harvey Barnes was denied at the near post by Vicario, with Woltemade’s follow-up cleared off the line by Kevin Danso.
Tino Livramento had a goal-bound effort blocked, before Gordon and Guimaraes combined to finally find a breakthrough.
The Brazil international met Gordon’s pull back from the left wing with a wonderful swerving finish, but Newcastle’s failure to immediately build on that lead proved costly.
Tottenham twice come from behind
Vicario was equal to another Miley effort, and the Newcastle midfielder was at fault as Romero levelled, converting after the ball was recycled back into the box following the teenager’s failure to clear.
Tottenham were left furious when Thomas Bramall was sent to the pitchside monitor to review Bentancur’s challenge on Burn at a corner. He duly pointed to the spot after the check and Gordon sent Vicario the wrong way.
Yet Tottenham made the most of the nine minutes of stoppage time, Romero netting in the unlikeliest of fashions with a goal that was as stunning as it was bizarre to at least ease some of the pressure on Frank.
