Iconic horror directors Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele are joining forces for a dark, new religious-themed film. The lauded creatives have made their mark writing, producing, and directing some of the genre’s most notable works, with Raimi spawning the Evil Dead franchise and Peele winning an Academy Award for his first horror feature, Get Out. While each director has carved their own path, they are uniting for the first time to bring audiences an intense new adaptation.
As reported by Deadline, Raimi and Peele are set to produce a new horror feature based on the short film Portrait of God. Writer and director Dylan Clark is behind the intense short, which currently has over 8.7 million views on YouTube. The plot of the feature adaptation is under wraps, but it will expand on the dark religious themes presented in the short, which focuses on a painting where viewers often see different things, potentially even the face of god. The short thrives on tension and minimalism, allowing the themes at play and the framing to inspire horror in the viewer. The plot of the Portrait of God short film on YouTube reads:
A religious girl prepares a presentation about a painting titled “Portrait of God”. What she sees challenges her beliefs.
Clark is said to be directing the feature and co-writing the script with The Inheritance scribe Joe Russo. Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures are producing the horror feature together. While Peele and Raimi are merely producing, their eye for talent and unique stories in the genre makes their collaboration a good omen for the Portrait of God feature adaptation. The spec seems to have caused some competitive bidding among studios, with Peele and Raimi ultimately looking to have won out.
Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele Have More Scares Planned
Jordan Peele has another planned horror film on the way, which is currently untitled. The project has also been delayed several times, and currently doesn’t have a release scheduled, as the Oscar winner continues to develop it. However, it is likely to continue the writer-director’s trend of combining horror elements with social commentary, like his past outings Get Out, Us, and Nope. Peele is also set to produce a remake of the Wes Craven horror classic The People Under the Stairs.
Sam Raimi has already directed his next horror feature, Send Help, starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien, which is slated for release in 2026. He is also producing Evil Dead Burn, which is following the success of Evil Dead Rise, both continuing the franchise Raimi created. The producer has several other horror projects in the works, with Play Dead in production and plans for Crawl 2 and a remake of Magic still in the works.
The feature film based on Portrait of God doesn’t currently have a release date, but further details will follow as the film enters pre-production and filming. With the heated nature surrounding the spec, it will likely eye a quick turnaround, and audiences may see Peele and Raimi’s first collaboration sooner than expected.
