After a red-hot 6-1 start to the season, the Chicago Bulls have cooled off considerably and slipped back into familiar territory in 10th in the Eastern Conference at 9-10.

As trade season approaches, with Dec. 15 being the date most restrictions are lifted for players that signed deals this summer, the Bulls have to decide if they want to be buyers this season. The hot start certainly showed the potential of this group to compete, but now they have to determine if that’s worth chasing again or if that was simply an early-season mirage.

Those conversations are happening inside the Bulls’ facility, and the biggest name popping up in those internal discussions is Chicago native Anthony Davis, per ESPN. Some in Chicago view him as a fix for their leaky defense and a strong veteran to add to bolster their young, talented roster. Others within the organization believe it’s too early to take that kind of swing, but the consensus, per the report, is that even if they did make an offer on Davis, they would not be willing to break up their young core to get him or any other veteran.

The real question then is how desperate are the Mavs to move Davis. After Dallas fired general manager Nico Harrison last month, the expectation around the league was that the Mavs would at least listen to offers on the star center. Finding a fit for the 32-year-old Davis given his contract and injury history isn’t easy, and Dallas will never come close to getting the kind of return in a second Davis trade as what they gave up to get him by trading Luka Dončić.

If the Bulls aren’t willing to part with their young core — which definitely includes Josh Giddey and Matas Buzelis, and potentially also includes Coby White — it’s hard to see them being able to make an offer Dallas would be intrigued by, even understanding Davis’ trade value is diminished. If White was to be included, that could make it more of a conversation inside the Mavs’ front office.

Still, given Davis’ ties to Chicago, the Bulls will be attached to Davis in just about any version of a trade rumors report. Though for now it feels like it would be a surprise to see the Bulls make such a move, especially after their slide, but if they can rebound and find their early season form again to move back into playoff contention, perhaps things will heat up again ahead of the deadline.
