Flamengo lift Copa Libertadores after cagey all-Brazilian final to claim record fourth triumph

Flamengo won the 2025 Copa Libertadores after a cagey all-Brazilian final against Palmeiras in Peru, becoming the first club from the country to lift the trophy four times.

Former Manchester City defender Danilo scored the only goal of the game after 67-minutes; the 34-year-old heading home from a Giorgian de Arrascaeta corner to give Flamengo a third South American crown in six years and avenge the defeat suffered at the hands of Palmeiras in 2021.

Brazilian clubs have dominated the competition in recent years, winning all but one of the last nine editions. Five of the last seven finals have been all-Brazilian affairs, with Palmeiras and Flamengo claiming the coveted prize five times between them in that time.

This year’s clash, between the top two Serie A clubs, was a largely tense occasion at Estadio Monumental “U” in Lima, with few clear-cut chances carved out by either side throughout.

Under ex-Chelsea and Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis, Flamengo scored just 13 goals across the tournament, but their success was built on a mean defence, having conceded just five times en route to the title.

Luis becomes only the ninth man to win the competition both as a player and as a coach, having claimed the trophy twice with Flamengo in 2019 and 2022.
