In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow was seen to meet his assumed demise at the maw of the fearsome Kraken. Now the monstrous sea creature is about to make a comeback, but this time in a Norwegian action-horror movie from the director of disaster movie, The Tunnel. Nordic horrors like the epic Troll in 2022 have been big hits with fans, and now it looks like Kraken is going to be your next horror obsession from the frozen north.
Kraken follows marine biologist Johanne as she investigates odd occurrences linked to a local fjord. As deadly events unfold, she uncovers a terrifying myth lurking beneath the water’s surface – a giant, multi-armed monster ready to destroy everything. This legendary creature is ready to unleash havoc on those destroying the ecosystem – yet another climate change, environmentalist monster movie.
The movie is being distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films, and recently unleashed a trailer showing off a little of the main attraction, but also keeping plenty under wraps for now. The movie is directed by Pål Øie and stars Sara Khorami, Mikkel Bratt Silset, Ingvild Holthe Bygdnes, Øyvind Brandtzæg, Jenny Evensen, and Steinar Klouman Hallert. You can check out the trailer for Kraken below.
The Kraken Has Appeared Many Times on Screen
Just like many monsters of myth, the Kraken has appeared in many forms over the years, but in the end, it is always a huge tentacled beast with a taste for seafaring vessels…ships, basically. While there have been some cute versions, in animated movies like Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken and Deep, in its live action appearances the creature is one of those things that could put you off cruising Caribbean waters for a while, just in case.
The Kraken made an appearance in both versions of the Greek epic Clash of the Titans, brought to life brilliantly by the final stop-motion work of Ray Harryhausen in the 1981 original, and in a more stylized CGI version in the 2010 remake of the movie. The creature also made a brief appearance in the second Pirates of the Caribbean movie as the pet of Davy Jones, which claims Jack Sparrow in its tentacles and teeth, dragging him to the bottom of the sea with The Black Pearl.
Norwegian horror movies are known for bringing ominous, less flashy creature features to screens. In 2022’s Troll, which is set to release its sequel soon, the gigantic monsters were brilliantly realized, and that is likely to be the same for the titular beast in Kraken. U.S. audiences will get to see the film early in 2026, when Kraken takes over cinemas and VOD services.
