Slot admits Reds must ‘face where we are’ after Champions League drubbing

Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted his side must “face where we are” following a 4-1 Champions League defeat to PSV at Anfield that condemned the Reds to a ninth defeat in 12 matches in all competitions.

Slot’s team were hoping to bounce back from a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Nottingham Forest on Saturday but instead suffered further misery as an early Ivan Perisic penalty, followed by a Guus Til goal and Couhaib Driouech brace in the second-half put Liverpool on their worst run of results in more than 70 years.

Dominik Szoboszlai had equalised before the break but some clinical finishing from the visitors and some torrid defending from Liverpool ensured it was to be an evening to forget for the hosts.

The result piles further pressure on Slot, and the Liverpool boss confessed the defeat was hard to take.

“Every time it is the same question, the emotions are very negative and disappointing,” Slot told TNT Sports.

“The way we conceded 1-0, I want to be positive about the reaction of the players to going 1-0 down. Until half-time we played a very good game. I don’t think anyone would have expected us to lose this game 4-1.

“After half-time we conceded quite early. We still had a few good chances to make it 2-2, but 10, 15 minutes before the end we conceded another goal.

“It is hard to take. After we conceded the first one, we saw the reaction I want to see, and it’s not easy because we had a big loss at the weekend [against Nottingham Forest]. It’s another big loss.”

However, Slot opted to remain positive, urging his players to “fight really hard” to get their season back on track.

“The only way to go is to go through now,” Slot said.

“Face where we are in, fight really hard.”

Next up for the Reds is a trip to the London Stadium to face West Ham on Sunday.
