Liverpool’s senior team may not be giving supporters much to shout about, but the Reds’ Under-18s picked up an impressive 2-1 at Newcastle on Saturday.

Red Card: Murray-Holme (two yellows)

Simon Wiles’ young side took on the Magpies in the Premier League Cup, looking to bounce back from a surprise 6-3 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest.

It was a tough assignment for Liverpool, considering they are ninth in the U18 Premier League currently while Newcastle are in second place.

Despite the league positions, the Reds enjoyed a perfect opening period, scoring twice before the half-hour mark.

Josh Abe opened the scoring for the visitors, with the prodigious 15-year-old a big talent who is the subject of interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.

He finished clinically into the corner after being teed up by Josh Sonni-Lambie, with the latter then finding the net himself to double Liverpool’s advantage.

The centre forward buried a shot from outside the penalty after coming close earlier, putting the Reds in control.

Chances came and went for both sides after the break, with Newcastle pushing for a way back into the game and Sonni-Lambie nearly getting his second of the afternoon.

Matthew Taylor set up a tense finale, making it 2-1 with 20 minutes left on the clock, heading past Bailey Hall.

Liverpool had to make it through the final exchanges with 10 men after Haydn Murray-Holme received a second yellow card, but they held on.

Despite this, the Reds still bowed out of the Premier League Cup by virtue of finishing third in Group B, but it is still a win that should give Wiles and his players confidence.
