When it comes to my skin, winter just hits differently. The cooler, drier air really disagrees with me, and I end up with skin that looks and feels dull, dry, and sometimes even flaky. Similar to how I have to make a few adjustments to my beauty regimen when traveling, I also have to step up my winter skincare routine. If you’re in the same boat, this post is for you! Today, I’m sharing all of the seasonal changes I make as well as my favorite cold-weather beauty products that keep my skin feeling bright and well hydrated all season long.
P.S. If you love discovering new beauty finds, my beauty gift guide is a great place to start.
Winter Skincare Tips & Tricks
Before diving into my favorite winter skincare products, I wanted to share a few tips and tricks I like to lean on this time of year. While the right products and skincare steps can make a big difference in your skin’s overall health, there are also a few other things to keep in mind during the cooler months. Here are some of the behaviors and habits I try to be more aware of in the wintertime.
1. Bundle Up
Don’t overexpose your face to the elements. Use hats, scarves, or even face coverings to protect your skin from the harsh cold as much as possible!
2. Stay Hydrated
While selecting the right moisturizer is key, you also need to stay hydrated from the inside out. Drink plenty of water to help your skin maintain a healthy glow. Speaking of hydration my favorite electrolyte packets are on sale for BF here.
3. Don’t Overcleanse
Not overcleansing is important year-round, but especially in a winter skincare routine. I’ll go into more detail below, but I always cut back on exfoliating and try to cleanse with a moisture-rich product during the cooler months. You may also want to consider washing your face less often and taking shorter showers, as these practices can strip your skin quite easily!
4. Use a Humidifier
If possible, use a humidifier in your home. This is a great one that is also on sale. The air can get so dry this time of year, and manually adding some moisture back into it can be really helpful when it comes to preventing dry skin!
Winter Skincare Favorites
Okay, now let’s chat about my favorite winter skincare products. Some of these are beauty staples I reach for year-round, while others are more specific to the cooler months. I prefer not to make any big, sweeping changes to my routine—instead, I simply tweak it seasonally as needed to stay on top of my skincare health.
Red Light Mask
I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not always super consistent with my red light mask—despite how much I love it. However, in the winter months, I’m very diligent about using it. When I do, I notice a real difference in my skin’s texture and fine lines.
This LED mask is the one I use (currently on sale, which is very rare!). I love it so much that I’m considering investing in a red light mask for my chest and neck area as well! If you’re masking at night, it also helps to pull your hair back—I follow my low sleek bun tutorial but lay off the heavy products.
Heavy Moisturizer
I also switch up my moisturizer in the wintertime. This is the one I use most often in my daily beauty routine, but when the temps really drop, I reach for a heavier cream and add this rejuvenation cream as a finishing step. I also use this combo before flying, since airplane cabins are so dry and hard on your skin. You can check out my travel beauty routine for more of my go-to products.
Keep in mind that while this combination is lovely for winter, it would be far too heavy for me personally in the summer—especially since I live in a very humid climate!
Facial Oil
Facial oil is another product I lay off of in the summer months, since my makeup is typically already melting off my face in Florida. However, it’s a must-have in my winter skincare routine. I apply this facial oil right before my moisturizer, and I’ve found it’s also important to use it on my neck, chest, and hands at night during the cooler months!
Cleanse With Moisture
In the wintertime, I lay off heavier exfoliating products and resurfacing pads. Instead, I swap them out for a gentler cleanser with added hydration. This skin-softening cleanser is an excellent option! I also try not to overwash my face, since my skin is usually already quite dry and tight.
Lip Mask
You can’t forget about your lips! My daily go-to gloss is this one—I love its anti-aging qualities. But in the cooler months, I make sure to add a mask as well. This lip mask is great; I love the thick formula, smooth texture, and the scent (I use “berry”). For all of these reasons, this product makes its way onto my beauty gift guide year after year!
Hydrating & Pore-Minimizing Face Mask
I’ve talked about this mask quite a bit lately, but it’s just so good (currently on sale for BF week)! In my winter skincare routine, I usually amp up my masking and try to use one at least twice a week—though my optimal number is three. These masks go a long way in keeping my skin hydrated, glowy, and firm.
A Winter Skincare Routine That Works
As we approach the cooler months, I hope these winter skincare tips, tricks, and favorites help you put your best face forward this season! I always recommend testing out a few different products to see what works best for you. After all, everyone’s skin is different, so it may take a little experimenting before you land on the perfect combination.
