‘South Park’ Creators’ New Project Suffers Another Setback at Paramount

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who have a long-standing relationship with Paramount, have seen their upcoming film project removed from the 2026 release schedule. Plot details surrounding the movie are still under wraps, but it will be an original live-action comedy that teams the creative minds behind the animated comedy sensation with hip-hop star Kendrick Lamar. Lamar and David Free are producing through pgLang, and Parker and Stone are producing through Park County. They released a joint statement regarding the delay:

“It’s true – we’re moving (again). We’re working hard at finishing the movie.”

The untitled movie was originally slated for release last July before the decision was made to shift it to March 2026. However, the film has now been removed from Paramount’s release schedule entirely, with no new date provided. While some may assume that there could be potential controversy surrounding the film behind the scenes, as South Park and its creators don’t shy away from pushing the envelope, it seems the movie being pulled from the release schedule is the result of more mundane circumstances.

According to Deadline, the delay stems from busy schedules. Lamar is currently on tour, hindering his ability to lend time to the project, which should be into the post-production phase. Parker and Stone are also hard at work on the current season of South Park, which continues to see robust viewership amid headline-grabbing episodes targeting politics.

Parker and Stone have only made movies sparingly. While their career began with movies like Cannibal! The Musical and Orgazmo, their last big-screen release was 2004’s Team America: World Police. Lamar is also not known for films, but has clearly aligned with creatives that compliment his sensibilities. Vernon Chatman, who has served as a long-running producer on South Park and created Wonder Showzen, is said to have penned the script. At last year’s CinemaCon, Paramount’s Brian Robbins excitedly announced the project, adding that it’s:

“One of the funniest and most original scripts we’ve ever read.”

Given that Parker, Stone, and Lamar have more than proven their aptitude for music, it’s also possible that it could heavily feature songs. Team America, South Park, and their multi-award-winning Broadway show, The Book of Mormon, all involve original music, and Lamar has more than 20 Grammy wins, and headlined the Superbowl halftime show earlier this year. Still, audiences aren’t likely to see the secretive movie for some time. While it could still see a 2026 release later in the year, the creative team behind the film is likely to ensure it’s ready before setting another date. Once Lamar’s tour wraps, and season 28 of South Park airs its finale, both parties should be able to put their efforts into a live-action comedy that’s sure to wow fans with comedy and commentary.
