Zack Snyder arrived at Netflix with many big franchise plans, but it looks like another of the former DCEU director’s projects with the streamer could have been axed. Snyder has delivered some divisive movies as part of his Netflix deal, including his Army of the Dead saga and the even more divisive Rebel Moon. Now it looks like his animated series, Twilight of the Gods, has been canceled after a single season.
While many of Snyder’s projects continue to be driven by his dedicated fandom – the same one that will not allow anyone to move on from the Snyderverse – for everyone else, the writer/director just doesn’t quite hit the spot on as many occasions as someone always being talked about should. Twilight of the Gods is an animated series based on Norse mythology, which followed a mortal king and a shield-maiden who find themselves in a battle with fading gods. They must embark on a quest that sends their world spiraling towards a doomed future.
Other shows that have been quietly canceled by Netflix are Exploding Kittens, based on the popular card game, and Good Times, which included a voice cast of J.B. Smoove, Marsai Martin, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Jay Pharoah. Despite the string of cancellations, Netflix is still heavily investing in its animated slate, with Ricky Gervais’ Alley Cats, set to join projects like Ghostbusters, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, and Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.
What Went Wrong for Zack Snyder?
Since stepping away from the DCEU, things have never quite managed to click for Snyder. He was able to give Snyderverse fans what they wanted with the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but after signing a huge deal with Netflix, and delivering several hugely expensive movies, things have not gone quite as well as the streamer expected.
Both Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon arrived with big ambitions, but despite both franchises having new movies “in development,” there has been no update on either that suggests they are still a going concern for Netflix. In July, Snyder said in an interview that he has “tons of stories” to tell in the Rebel Moon universe, but the chance that he will get to make any of them seems to be slipping further and further away.
Similarly, Snyder is said to be developing his own LAPD crime thriller, and in May it was said to be “in the third act” as far as scripting went. At the time, Kurt Joahnstad, who co-wrote Rebel Moon and is working with Snyder on his LAPD film, suggested that the script would be complete “in about a month.” Nothing has been heard about the project now for almost six months.
Some more positive news was revealed in the same interview about Snyder’s UFC MMA movie Brawler. Johnstad said that writing on that film was complete, and Snyder was in the process of “finding the right people that can pull off being professional fighters and athletes.” While he was said to be “deep in the search,” there have been no further updates.
Snyder has always been a divisive director, and his recent run of projects has not exactly done anything to change that reputation outside his fanbase. Recently, his foray into the world of Instagram has seen him sharing some unseen behind-the-scenes photos from various movies, including his time at the DCEU. Naturally, this has sparked new calls to “restore the Snyderverse,” and many fans still believe that a future exists where Netflix purchases Warner Bros. Pictures and does just that. It couldn’t happen…could it?
