Boston Blue Star Says Sean and Danny’s Relationship Gets Complicated

Boston Blue has officially set up a new arc for Sean (Mika Amonsen), one that could complicate both his own life and his relationship with his father, Danny (Donnie Wahlberg).

In the most recent episode of Boston Blue titled Code of Ethics, Sean met his new love interest, Penny (Xochitl Gomez). They connected immediately, but things took a turn when he learned that she had a criminal record. Danny is not comfortable with his son dating a convicted felon, and he becomes more protective of him than ever before.

Although Danny appeared to accept it by the end of the episode, Amonsen teased that viewers had not seen the end of his father’s displeasure just yet. In an interview with Us Weekly, the actor explained that things between Sean and Danny will remain turbulent for quite some time. However, the actor didn’t want to reveal too much and said that audiences would just have to tune in to see what happens. “We have our challenges. I will let viewers continue to tune in to see where it goes and if Penny returns.“

Although Amonsen stayed relatively vague, he did let it slip that Penny would be around for a while. He also said that Danny’s attitude towards their relationship will definitely be the source of many conflicts later on. “She’ll be around and her relationship with Sean, it continues to expand. Danny and Sean’s relationship challenges them, but I think it challenges Sean in a way as well.” He added that Penny will force his character to grow up a little bit, too. “It feels like a first serious girlfriend for him, and he learns a little bit of work and life balance.”

The actor further elaborated that while Danny doesn’t like Sean’s new girlfriend, at the end of the day, he just wants his son to be happy. And, as time goes on, he will realize that his son is an adult, and he can’t control what he chooses to do with his life. “You’re going to see the pushback in different ways [from Danny’s side]. But you eventually see Danny recognize that his son is a full-grown man. Even when there is something that Danny disagrees with, you’re going to see him recognize that he just wants his son to be happy. There’s only so much Danny can impose — and Sean is at an age where he is making his own decisions,” he explained.

Amonsen also spoke about the father-son duo’s bond in general. He said that it’s a work in progress. However, as the season unfolds, the two will slowly begin to understand each other better and patch up their relationship. He stated that viewers will get to see Wahlberg’s character grow as a person as well. “Regardless of Danny’s opinion, he takes a deep breath and says, ‘I just want you to be happy.’ That happens in several different ways throughout the season. We see a lot of Danny growing in opposition to Sean also growing. We see Danny really expand as a character.”

He added that Wahlberg had been extremely helpful and easy to work with. Amonsen said that whenever he had a question, his co-star was very helpful, especially due to how long he has been a part of the franchise. “Donnie was very informative — obviously — because he has so much history with the show. Whenever I had questions, it was very, very relaxed, and it felt very natural with Donnie. He has this father-like energy about him. As much as he’s been Sean’s father, he’s been a great mentor to me on how to navigate a role like this and a show like this. I couldn’t ask for a better costar.”
