One of the most shocking and surprising action hits in years was 2022’s Sisu, and its new sequel, Sisu: Road to Revenge, is proving to be even more popular with a higher Rotten Tomatoes scores from both critics and audiences.
In a time when action movies are being churned out with a cookie-cutter familiarity, Sisu was a war movie, a revenge movie, and an action movie that put an old man into one of the most brutal battles for survival seen on screen for many years. Audiences and critics were united in their praise for the movie, and it frequently appears in the Top 10 on streaming charts three years later. Now the sequel, Sisu: Road to Revenge has arrived in cinemas and is blowing away even the high praise of its predecessor.
Movieweb’s own Zachary Lee calls the sequel a “bonkers, bloodsoaked sequel fans have been waiting for,” and that seems to be a good summation of the film that has somehow managed to live up to the hype of the first movie. The synopsis of Sisu: Road to Revenge reads:
“Sisu: Road to Revenge is a wall-to-wall cinematic action event, a sequel to the original sleeper hit SISU. Returning to the house where his family was brutally murdered during the war, “the man who refuses to die” (Jorma Tommila) dismantles it, loads it on a truck, and is determined to rebuild it somewhere safe in their honor. When the Red Army commander who killed his family (Stephen Lang from Don’t Breathe) comes back hellbent on finishing the job, a relentless, eye-popping cross-country chase ensues — a fight to the death, full of clever, unbelievable action set pieces.”
The ‘Sisu’ Franchise is Elevated Action to Challenge Reality
While there are many movies that have been accused of ignoring the laws of physics, defying logic, and requiring a suspension of disbelief that even the most accommodating moviegoers cannot quite buy into, Sisu: Road to Revenge flies in the face of this and makes the carnage of George Miller’s Mad Max movies look like a gentle period drama.
On its debut, the sequel is sitting on a 95% Tomatometer score and 90% Popcornmeter rating, both of which have stepped up a notch from Sisu. Amy Nicholson of the Los Angeles Times calls it “the action spectacular of the year” which puts its aging action hero lead into the “indie translation of Mad Max: Fury Road.” Meanwhile, Peter Gray of The AU Review says the sequel is a “glorious celebration of the revenge genre.”
Audiences have been similarly positive, saying the sequel takes “the raw intensity” of the first movie and turns it into “Sisu vs Mad Max, Quentin Tarantino, and MCU explosions.” Sisu: Road to Revenge even managed to remind some reviewers of the controversial Fast & Furious space exploration, but in this movie is “absolutely ridiculous, and I’m here for it.”
Sisu is currently available to stream for free on Tubi, and it is worth watching before getting out to the cinema to catch the even more bonkers sequel in all its bloody glory. There is obviously no streaming date available for Sisu: Road to Revenge yet, but we will be sure to let you know when it is announced.
