While The Game Awards is still a few weeks away, other award shows like The Golden Joystick Awards have already passed by, giving hints at what to expect from upcoming ceremonies. There weren’t too many shocking surprises among the Golden Joystick Award winners, but one game still managed to dominate a majority of categories.
Thankfully, the differences between categories and audiences mean there are still a few brand-new options to look forward to when it comes to The Game Awards this year. Each ceremony also gives new participants a second chance to win a highly coveted award for themselves, but there is one game that will be a massive hurdle for numerous categories this year.
Expedition 33 Won All Of Its Golden Joystick Nominations
This year, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 had an unprecedented run at the Golden Joystick Awards. Cleaning up awards for Best Storytelling, Visual Design, Soundtrack, Supporting Performer, Lead Performer, Studio of the Year, and Ultimate Game Of The Year, the breakout RPG hit made an outsized impression throughout the ceremony.
Despite the tough competition with games like Hollow Knight: Silksong, HADES II, and Death Stranding, it’s clear that the public favor is heavily leaning towards Expedition 33 this year, giving the developers and cast involved plenty of opportunities to enjoy their smashing success.
As if Expedition 33‘s Golden Joystick results weren’t impressive enough on their own, the fact that it won every single category it was nominated in sets a high bar of what to expect from The Game Awards. Being a debut title from a brand-new studio without the backing of a major studio behind them, it’s easy to see why Expedition 33 is getting so much attention, but it does have one unfortunate side effect.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Will Likely Sweep At The Game Awards
With Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 having been nominated for a record-breaking number of categories at the 2025 Game Awards, a repeat success would snuff out most of the competition with ease. While the variety of unique categories from the Golden Joystick Awards still gave other projects a chance to shine, it’s already looking grim for the rest of the competition.
Combined with Silksong competing for GOTY and best independent game, it’s hard to imagine any smaller projects from other new or up-and-coming studios making nearly the same splash as they did last year with games like Balatro.
Hopefully, there is still room for a few surprises in categories that can offer a chance for smaller studios and other entrants to get their chance in the spotlight. So far, it seems like we can already expect Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to have a deserving sweep, similar to Baldur’s Gate 3 in 2023.
