Though hype is building for the fast-approaching Jujutsu Kaisen season 3, the series’ title character has never been in a tougher spot. After the sealing of Gojo in Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, Yuji no longer has the world’s strongest sorcerer to protect him, and the hero’s English voice actor is teasing some massive fights as a result.
At Anime Pasadena 2025, ScreenRant spoke to Yuji’s English dub actor, Adam McArthur, about the much-teased fight between Yuji and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 protagonist Yuta. Yuta is second only to Gojo himself in terms of power level, meaning a fight between him and Yuji is unlikely to go well for the series protagonist.
Yuta is touted as the second-strongest sorcerer behind Gojo, and Gojo is so OP. It’s another example of Yuji being the underdog, which is his constant position in the series.
If you’re anime-only, you’re watching this thinking, “Okay, Yuta’s gonna kill Yuji—how does he get out of that?” There’s nothing more fun than seeing characters you love placed in impossible situations. Season 3 will definitely be one of those cases.
More than just Yuta, though, Yuji also still has to contend with Sukuna. After the tragic events of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, ScreenRant asked McArthur about Yuji’s relationship with Sukuna and how season 2’s events have shaped Yuji’s relationship with the strongest sorcerer in history.
Where we’re at in the anime—especially post-Shibuya—Yuji hasn’t fully processed the devastation Sukuna caused. We see his immediate crash after regaining his body, but I think Yuji now realizes he’s going to have to do things he never thought he’d have to do, **because** of Sukuna.
He knows he has to stop him. After seeing so many people hurt, he’ll do anything it takes. I don’t see an understanding ever happening between them.
Yuji’s Predicament Has Never Been More Precarious In Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3
While Yuji’s friends at Jujutsu High undoubtedly have his back, he did lose three key allies over the course of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2. Nanami, Nobara, and Gojo are all either dead or incapacitated, meaning Yuji is mostly on his own in terms of dealing with the incoming threat of Yuta.
At the end of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, fans are led to believe that Yuta agreed to execute Yuji due to the latter’s failure to protect Gojo.
While Yuji has faced powerful foes before, none of them come close to matching Yuta’s power. Yuta easily ranks among Jujutsu Kaisen’s strongest characters, while Yuji is still trying to figure out his own powers and abilities. Given this, McArthur’s assessment that Yuji is the underdog is absolutely correct. At the time, Yuji genuinely doesn’t stand a chance against Yuta.
Yuji Has Only One Chance Against Yuta, But It Would Cost Him Greatly
Yuji’s only ace-in-the-hole is potentially Sukuna, who is leagues stronger than Yuta (though it’s questionable what that match-up would look like with Sukuna trapped in Yuji’s body).
Even there, however, problems arise. Given the devastation Sukuna inflicted on Shibuya in Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 and the trauma that he inflicted on Yuji, the young sorcerer is unlikely to give his body over to the King of Curses again.
As McArthur points out, all of this sets up an absolutely devilish conflict for Yuji in Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 and is another example of why the series is such a big hit.
Sukuna isn’t just a power-up for Yuji or another tool in his arsenal. Letting Sukuna take over his body comes at a heavy price as a powerful sorcerer’s actions weigh heavily on Yuji’s heart.
All of it sets up an unforgettable conflict for Yuji. As Adam McArthur points out, Yuji Itadori has never been in a tougher spot, and all signs point to Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 being one for the history books.
