One of the best and most beloved military sci-fi franchises ever made is returning with a new series courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios, and the man who helped bring it to life in the first place, Martin Gero. Premiering all the way back in 1994, Stargate was director Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi adventure film starring Kurt Russell that became an immediate hit with fans, so much so that it spawned an entire universe of TV shows. The latest live-action offering was Stargate Universe, which concluded in 2010 after two seasons.
Per Deadline, Amazon is resurrecting the military sci-fi franchise with a new series simply titled Stargate, which will see Gero serve as creator, writer, executive producer and showrunner. His past work in the series includes runs on Atlantis, SG-1, and Universe, and he’s also the man responsible for creating the hit NBC series, Blindspot. Also on board as EPs are Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures, and Dean Devlin and Emmerich, who created the 1994 movie. In a statement released to coincide with the announcement, Gero says he’s more than excited about once again playing in the Stargate sandbox:
“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series. Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA.
“I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”
For those not in the know, the story of Stargate centers around the discovery of an ancient ring-shaped device that creates a wormhole, enabling near-instantaneous travel across the universe. In the original movie, control of the device was seized by the U.S. military, who worked with scientists to help figure out its secrets. The first spinoff series, Stargate: SG-1, served as a sequel to the movie, picking up one year after the events in Emmerich’s film.
Amazon Is Betting Big on ‘Stargate’
Amazon’s decision to resurrect Stargate comes after the studio paid a hefty sum of $8.5 billion to acquire MGM studios three years ago. Since then, they’ve been targeting popular IPs that they can create movies or TV shows from, with Stargate being one of many on a list that includes Legally Blonde, Tomb Raider, and Poltergeist. For Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV Development for Amazon MGM Studios, the decision to bring back Stargate was an easy one that he believes will pay off:
“Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos. In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin, Tory, and Joby, we’re honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience, one that honors the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.”
Plot details remain scarce as to when Stargate will take place in the overall timeline of things, so we’ll have to wait and see how it all unfolds as time progresses. If you want to relive all the fun of the original movie, it’s currently streaming on both MGM+ and Tubi.
