First and foremost, I think we all know just how much talent Estevao Willian has got and the ceiling he’s got too. He has the potential to be one of the best in the world, that goes without saying.
So for now at least, can we stop saying it….? I just feel a bit uncomfortable with all the hype around Estevao. I write A LOT of articles every day, and this week all I’ve seemed to be writing about is praise for Estevao. It’s great, and I’m not spinning a positive into a negative. It’s just something doesn’t quite feel right about the constant hype and more importantly, everything that seems to be coming from the club.
ESPN reported today that Chelsea officials and members of the coaching staff believe that, within three seasons, Estevão could reach the status of “one of the ten best players in the world.”
Why are we doing this!? Why can’t we just let the boy play football without forecasting what number he’s going to be in world football within such a specific time range!? Just let him play and let him thrive!
I also saw reports and have actually heard them myself too from Chelsea sources, saying that Estevao will be a £150m-£200m player very soon. Yes, he probably will be. But again, what are we doing here? Why are we putting that out there!?
Can’t we just quietly celebrate in the fact that we know we have a future Ballon D’Or contender in the ranks and just let him develop? He’s 18-years-old. Despite the fact that he looks like he has it all about his game right now, he’s still learning and still developing.
Don’t get me wrong, I will always praise any player when they’re doing well and make sure I am writing about it regularly. I am not taking anything away from Chelsea here for finding such a gem of a player and actually getting him for a bargain fee compared to how much he will be worth down the line. I’ve given real praise for that, too. It’s a fantastic coup. And I’m not taking anything away from Estevao, he’s been class.
But we need to just relax a bit on all this noise and hype around him. We all know his potential and how good he can become. We don’t need to over-hype it all.
He’s had an incredible start to life at Chelsea and really, I’m not even concerned about the hype effecting him because he has a strong mentality. But we never know what goes on inside a players head and how outside noise can play a part. So let’s just calm down on all this a bit. Fans have a right to get excited about players and I’m not telling the fans here what to do or what to say – that’s completely on them, I’m not policing anything. I think it’s more the briefings around Estevao that need to calm down for now. Estevao gets us off our feet already, we don’t need to here predictions from the club on just how good he will become.
