‘The Legend of Zelda’ Live-Action Movie Leak Shows Link, Zelda & More

Sony Pictures’ and Nintendo’s live-action The Legend of Zelda movie officially entered production in New Zealand earlier this month, so it was only a matter of time before set leaks started to surface online. Videos posted on social media over the weekend appear to offer a first look at the long-awaited video game adaptation, with several fan-favorite characters spotted in the woods wearing their full costumes, including the film’s lead stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Bo Bragason in their respective roles as Link and Zelda. Since then, several images have also now been unveiled by Nintendo, all of which you can check out below!

The first video (shared directly below) gives a glimpse of Ainsworth wearing Link’s signature green tunic, complete with a brown leather belt and quiver. He is also sporting a mop of blonde hair, which is a far cry from his last appearance in the “quirky” comedy-drama Everything’s Going to Be Great. The second video captures Bragason in a woodland setting, dressed in blue robes akin to Princess Zelda’s Breath of the Wild look, finished off with leather boots and a pair of fingerless gloves. Both costumes look to be fairly accurate and in line with what fans would expect, which is not too surprising since Wes Ball, who is directing The Legend of Zelda, has expressed a strong commitment to honoring the source material.

Another clip (shown in the second video) captures the Zelda actress approaching another character, who looks to be played by none other than Severance actress Dichen Lachman – whose acclaimed turn in the Apple TV series made quite an impression. Her role in The Legend of Zelda has yet to be officially announced, but fans have already come to the conclusion that she is playing Impa, Zelda’s loyal bodyguard and trusted confidante, who has appeared in multiple video game entries, often as a skilled warrior. In the footage, she is seen standing alongside a horse during an interaction with Zelda, showing off her giant curved sword.

‘The Legend of Zelda’ Release Date: When Is the Film in Theaters?

The leaked Legend of Zelda teasers are probably the best fans can hope to see for a while, as production is not expected to wrap until April 2026, with a full trailer likely sometime after that. The film was originally set to open in theaters on Mar. 26, 2027, but it was pushed back earlier this year to allow for more time in post-production. Now the highly anticipated feature is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 7, 2027. “For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda,” Nintendo director Shigeru Miyamoto said in a statement at the time. “It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be.”

The live-action take on The Legend of Zelda is now due to hit theaters in the same month and year as Cynthia Erivo’s new musical feature and Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, so it will face some major competition at the box office. However, video game adaptations have become a cinematic phenomenon in recent years, driven by critically acclaimed and commercially successful films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog films. Zelda and Link are two of Nintendo’s flagship characters, which will no doubt help to attract audiences and boost the film’s performance when it eventually hits the big screen.
