While Star Wars seems to be prepping another movie trilogy with new characters, they still plan to revisit some beloved ones. Although The Rise of Skywalker left a bad taste in fans’ mouths, some still believe Rey, Finn, and Poe deserve another shot in a new film. And while it’s unclear exactly what Lucasfilm plans to do with the main trio, a new rumor suggests that a fan-favorite will find his way back to the big screen in a galaxy far, far away.
DanielRPK reports Lucasfilm is interested in bringing back John Boyega as Finn for an upcoming Star Wars movie. It’s unclear which project that could be, but the most likely one is the seemingly delayed Rey solo film starring Daisy Ridley. There were reports that Simon Kinberg is set to write a trilogy to usher in a new saga with fresh characters, but it seems the studio doesn’t want to lose sight of what fans are still attached to. Despite how the films received as a whole, people still enjoy these characters and the actors’ interpretations of them, especially Boyega, who many wanted to see become a Jedi as Finn. Of course, this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt, but there is some palpable momentum.
The big question is if Boyega would even want to return as Finn in the first place. He’s made peace with his Star Wars after his up-and-down experience starring in the trilogy, but has not appeared keen on reprising his character. Of course, that could always change in the future, especially since Lucasfilm could give Finn a meatier story to work with (and maybe a lightsaber, too). Here’s what he said about the current state of Star Wars:
“I feel like the arc that JJ tried to tie up, that’s where I feel comfortable with the release of him. And since then I’ve been able to enjoy, as a fan, ‘The Mandalorian’ and ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi.’ I’m enjoying the balance of all things.”
What’s Next For ‘Star Wars’?
The current state of Star Wars on the big screen has not been this uncertain since before Disney acquired the iconic franchise over a decade ago. Officially announced feature-length films seem to be canceled every other month, and even the most concrete project starring Daisy Ridley has faced setbacks during its development. It seems the studio is incredibly bullish on what to put out there, especially after the divisive response to its sequel trilogy. Not even Taika Waititi’s film is moving forward at a reasonable pace, while others like Rogue Squadron from Patty Jenkins may be back from the dead.

‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ is now set to arrive earlier on Disney+.
Not everything is dark and gloomy, Star Wars fans. The Mandalorian & Grogu spinoff film is set to hit heaters in 2026, while James Mangold is still attached to a Jedi origin story movie set for a late 2026 and early 2027 release window. The former is already in production, so that one will definitely come out at some point (unless Disney makes it a tax write-off). As the studio struggles to figure out the next big step in their movie franchise after the Skywalker Saga, expect them to keep mining familiar territory until then.
