October 31 – In a repeat of the 2021 showpiece match, Palmeiras and Flamengo will dispute an all-Brazilian final of the Copa Libertadores after the Sao Paulo club completed a remarkable semi-final comeback against Ecuador’s LDU Quito with a 4-0 win in the second leg.
The Brazilians overturned a 3-0 defeat from the first leg in Quito to book a spot in the final of South America’s flagship competition. On Thursday evening, Raphael Veiga scored twice to steer his club to an improbable 4-0 victory. In the 82nd minute, he converted the deciding penalty. Ramon Sousa and Bruno Fuchs were also on the scoresheet.
The win – the first time a Brazilian club has overcome a three-goal deficit in a knockout match of the Copa Libertadores – coincided with the fifth anniversary of Abel Ferreira’s arrival at Palmeiras. At a news conference, club president Leila Pereira called the Portuguese manager “the best manager in Palmeiras history.”
Pereira has won ten titles in five years with Palmeiras, including back-to-back Copa Libertadores titles in 2020 and 2021.
Palmeiras’s qualification sets up another all-Brazilian final – the fifth in the last six years. It also ensures Brazil an eighth title in the past nine editions of the tournament.
It’s the seventh time that Palmeiras have reached the final, the most of any Brazilian club. They featured in the showpiece match in 1961, 1968, 1999, 2000, 2020 and 2021. In that last final, in Montevideo, Uruguay, they triumphed against Flamengo 2-1. The Sao Paulo club would be delighted with the same outcome on November 29 at Lima’s Monumental Stadium.
