Abbott Elementary has knocked it out of the park again with another hysterically funny Halloween special. Last year, the show delivered one of its greatest episodes with season 4’s “Costume Contest”, in which Halloween costumes predictably took center stage. But this year’s episode to mark the holiday might be even better.
“Camping” saw the Abbott staff take their classes camping for Halloween, in a bizarre move that was bound to spell disaster. Of course, no holiday special would be complete without more outlandish teacher costumes, the best of which provided some more of Abbott Elementary’s all-time funniest moments.
In fact, it wouldn’t be overstating things to say that this wildly original instalment of the show deserves a place among the best Halloween TV episodes ever made. At the very least, it’s certainly the best Halloween episode released by any sitcom this year.
An Abbott Elementary Halloween Costume Is The Center Of Attention Again
Abbott Elementary’s unconventional pairing of Melissa and Jacob continues to steal the show in season 5, with Jacob in particular excelling himself in this latest Halloween episode. He came on the camping trip dressed as environmental activist Greta Thunberg, complete with pigtails, which had most fans of the show in fits of laughter.
There was some controversy over Jacob’s decision to don a Palestinian keffiyah scarf, which some viewers took as an anti-Israel gesture, while others suggested that it made light of a traditional Palestinian garment. Both of these views seemed in the minority among those who watched the episode, though, with most of the audience delighted with Jacob’s choice of costume.
Other outfit highlights of the episode included school principal Ava Colman as “Darth Ma” – a cross between Darth Maul from Star Wars and Octavia Spencer’s title character from Ma. Melissa, meanwhile, came as April O’Neil from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Janine & Gregory Wore TV’s Best Halloween Costumes Of 2024
“Camping” and its attention-grabbing costumes has picked up where last year’s “Costume Contest”, which is surely one of Abbott Elementary’s best-ever episodes, left off. For Halloween 2024, Janice and Gregory stole the show with their matching Jurassic Park-themed costumes, representing a mosquito in amber in Mr. DNA from the classic sci-fi adventure movie.
This somewhat obscure reference was lost on most of their fellow Abbott teachers, but the poor reception to their costumes only brought them closer together. The titular contest itself was a hoot, featuring some withering remarks from its student judges about their teachers’ outfits, and kindergarten Barbara overzealously endorsing Jacob’s decision to dress up as TV host Pat Sajak.
Teachers’ Halloween Costumes Have Become A Key Tradition Of Abbott Elementary
It’s now a firm tradition that the show comes up with some of TV’s best Halloween costumes each year, with many of them purposely sending up figures of popular culture. Last year, for example, Abbott Elementary’s school principal mocked Marvel’s Blade with her costume, following much-publicized problems they’d had with the franchise.
The outfits in the first Halloween episode of the series, season 2’s “Candy Zombies”, were also a joy to behold. Janine’s James Harden costume was the pick of the bunch, giving us a glimpse of just how creative Abbott Elementary’s writers were going to get in future Halloween episodes.
With the last two such episodes coming in back-to-back years, we can expect this tradition to become an annual celebration of just how wonderfully wacky the school’s teachers can be. Fans of Abbott Elementary should make sure they brush up on their pop culture before next Halloween, as it’s bound to come in handy.
