Few players have integrated into Liverpool’s dressing room as effortlessly as Jeremie Frimpong.
The Dutch full-back has quickly become one of the most well-liked figures within Arne Slot’s squad his energy, humour, and constant good mood often stealing the show in behind-the-scenes clips released by the club YouTube channel.
Those close to the group say Frimpong’s bond with Ibrahima Konaté has been particularly strong, with the pair regularly seen joking around at the AXA Training Centre. It’s a dynamic that speaks volumes about Frimpong’s personality positive, self-assured, and eager to lift spirits.
Unfortunately, that infectious enthusiasm has not yet been matched by a sustained run of games on the pitch. Since his summer arrival, the 24-year-old has endured a stop-start beginning to life at Anfield, with injuries repeatedly halting his progress.
The latest setback came during the 5-1 Champions League victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, when Frimpong was forced off midway through the first half. Slot confirmed after the game that the right-back had suffered another hamstring injury and would be out for “a few weeks”.
It’s a cruel blow for a player who had been desperate to showcase the dynamism that made him such a standout performer in the Bundesliga. At Bayer Leverkusen, Frimpong developed a reputation as one of Europe’s most explosive attacking full-backs his overlapping runs, sharp one-twos, and relentless pace forming a key part of their title-winning campaign.
Slot and his coaching staff remain confident those same qualities will soon translate to the Premier League.
That sense of belonging has undoubtedly been helped by the presence of his Dutch teammates Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, and Cody Gakpo all of whom have helped him settle quickly in Liverpool.
Frimpong himself has often spoken about how much the club meant to him growing up, and how watching the Premier League shaped his understanding of elite football. “I used to watch Liverpool a lot when I was younger,” he admitted in a recent interview with TNT Sports. “It’s a big club, with a big history.”
During that same interview, Frimpong was asked to name some of the best players in Premier League history across different attributes. When it came to strength, there was no hesitation. “I think I’ll give that to Virgil,” he smiled a fitting nod to his captain for both club and country.
His admiration for Van Dijk was matched by another Liverpool pick when asked about the best left foot in Premier League history. “Mohamed Salah,” Frimpong replied instantly a choice few would contest given the Egyptian’s remarkable goalscoring record and consistency.
Elsewhere, his selections showed a mix of nostalgia and flair: David Silva for his first touch, Hatem Ben Arfa for his creativity names that hint at the kind of football Frimpong enjoys and perhaps aspires to emulate.
For now, though, the focus will be on recovery. Slot will be keen to have Frimpong’s energy and drive back on the right flank as Liverpool look to reignite their Premier League campaign.
When he returns, supporters will be hoping to finally see the player who lit up the Bundesliga all pace, purpose, and personality.
