Chic Skirt Outfit Ideas You’ll Love for Fall and Winter

Skirts dominate my closet—I’d argue they’re my favorite fashion piece to style. Skirts with boots, colorful skirts, skirts with sweaters… the possibilities are endless! Lately, I’ve been thinking about how skirts tend to shine for most people in spring and summer, but are often overlooked when it comes to fall and winter dressing. Let’s change that! Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite skirt outfit ideas for cooler temps as well as recent styles that have caught my eye. Let the layering begin!

How to Wear Skirts in the Fall and Winter

Before diving into my skirt outfit ideas, let’s chat about how to make these pieces work during the cooler months. After living in NYC for years, I picked up a few styling tricks that make it totally possible to rock a skirt—even when the temperatures drop.

News Flash…You Don’t Have to Be Cold

I think many people shy away from skirts when cooler weather rolls in because, understandably, they don’t want to be cold or uncomfortable. But when you get creative, skirts can actually be quite warm. I love layering tights underneath (sometimes even multiple pairs), pairing skirts with boots and tall socks, and occasionally wearing heat-tech biker shorts underneath for extra warmth.

Mix and Match Lengths

I always love playing with proportions, and skirts are perfect for this! For example, I often pair a mini with a longer coat or duster. This combo is both functional and fashionable all at once—and one of my favorite skirt outfit ideas for fall. When it comes to pencil skirts or high-waisted midis, try a chunky, cropped coat to create balance and visual interest. Mixing and matching lengths helps define your shape and create a flattering silhouette, and the layers of fall and winter make this even more achievable.

Always Accessorize

Don’t shy away from belts, faux fur stoles, or gloves when styling a skirt for fall and winter. Accessories are a great way to introduce new textures, add a bit of color blocking, and of course, stay warm!

Skirt Outfit Ideas for Fall and Winter

Now that I’ve shared a few tips for pulling off these looks during the cooler months, let’s dive into some skirt outfit ideas. Here are a few of my favorite ways to style them fashionably while staying warm and comfortable!

1. Mini Skirt + Layered Coat

This combo has to be one of my favorite ways to style a mini for fall. Pairing it with a thicker coat is effortless—and there are so many ways to make it your own.

For example, try styling a chic mini with a blazer cinched at the waist with a belt for added structure. Add tall boots and a second layer of outerwear, and you’re good to go! This classic fall outfit is a great example of a look that’s both polished and practical.

If it isn’t too frigid out yet, another great transitional option is a mini skirt paired with sneakers and a longer coat layered on top. I recently styled this look with varying shades of green and a mix of materials and textures to keep things interesting.

Lastly, you can skip the boots and instead layer socks and tights together, as I did with this turtleneck outfit. I love how the oversized barn coat lets the mini just barely peek out—it’s such a fun proportion play for fall!

2. Fall Midi Skirt

I’ve actually written an entire post on how to style a midi skirt since it’s one of my all-time favorite silhouettes. That post includes plenty of skirt outfit ideas, but here are a few ways I like to style these pieces specifically for cooler weather.

For a fall, dressed-up everyday look, I love pairing midi skirts with a chunky sweater and flats. This printed midi and sweater outfit I wore in Paris is a great example of that combination.

If you’re looking to transition your midi skirt for a more party-ready vibe, try pairing it with a peplum top and platforms, as I did here. Another elegant option is styling a midi with a classic tucked-in blouse and stilettos.

And while the midi skirt is inherently a feminine shape, don’t be afraid to mix it with more masculine footwear. I recently styled a midi skirt with Western boots and again with loafers and socks — both looks turned out beautifully! It’s all about experimenting and layering to see what works for you.

3. Party-Ready Skirt Outfit Ideas

With the holiday season right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to start planning skirt outfits that can take you from cocktail parties to festive dinners. There are so many fun styles to choose from right now!

Wrap Maxi Skirt

One of my favorite trending skirt styles is the wrap maxi. It’s sophisticated, easy to wear, and such a flattering shape.

I recently wore this wrap maxi skirt outfit for the Tuckernuck store opening in September. Since it has an eye-catching tie waist, I opted for a simple tucked-in top. To add a bit of warmth—without competing with the bow—I simply draped a sweater over my shoulders.

Pencil Skirt

Another party-ready option is the pencil skirt. I always feel a little bad for this style, since so many women only associate it with workwear. But here, here, and here are a few great examples of how this silhouette can party!

This mixed-print look would be perfect for a fall cocktail party—I love how it turned out!

For a more overt party look, try a fluted pencil skirt outfit. Need a bit more coverage? Pair it with a turtleneck bodysuit or add a fur stole, like I did for a winter party last year.

Waterfall Waist Skirt

Another fun, unexpected choice is a colorful waterfall-waist skirt. This unique silhouette instantly becomes the star of the show—no extra styling required!

My Personal Current Favorite Skirt Outfit Ideas

Now that we’ve covered some fall and winter skirt outfit ideas, let’s take a peek at a few of my current favorite styles for pulling off these looks. As you know, I’ll always have my eye on a great full midi skirt or a preppy pleated mini—but below are some of the trendier options I’m shopping for this season!

Sheer Pencil Skirt

One of my favorite trending pieces for 2025 is the sheer pencil skirt. Is it a midi? A mini? It’s a little bit of both! I’m currently eyeing this one and this one.

Satin and Lace Skirt

Satin is really having a moment—from slip dresses to slinky skirts, the material is everywhere. Two very pretty options on my wishlist right now are this silk-and-lace midi and this burgundy skirt. Both would look stunning styled with an oversized fisherman sweater and sleek flats.

Leather-Like Mini Skirt

And let’s not forget about a leather-like mini! This is another skirt currently on my wishlist, and I’m loving everything from croc-embossed styles to sleek, minimalist pieces. My list keeps growing—but this one, this one, this one, and this one are currently at the top!

Party Pencil Skirts

As I said above pencil skirts deserve to have some fun too! There are A LOT of good options this season. Personal favorites include this printed one, this over the top sequin style, and this chartreuse option. If money were no object I would be scooping up this one and this one. A girl can dream!
