Ke Huy Quan’s Love Hurts Surges On HBO Max Streaming Charts 8 Months After Release

Eight months after releasing in theaters, Love Hurts is surging on HBO Max’s global streaming charts. The action-comedy film features Ke Huy Quan in his first leading role after making a triumphant acting return with his Academy Award-winning performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once. He plays a former assassin, Marvin Gable, who has become a realtor, only to find himself drawn back into the violent world he left behind.

Love Hurts reviews were mostly negative, with the film receiving an 18% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, although it has a far more favorable audience score of 61%. It also did not perform well at the box office, going on to make $17.6 million worldwide against an $18 million budget.

Nevertheless, Love Hurts is now the fourth most-watched movie on HBO Max’s global streaming charts, where it ranks ahead of the 2025 romantic comedy Materialists and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer in the sixth and seventh spots, and is only behind Superman, The Substance, and I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Along with being fourth overall on the global charts, Love Hurts is in HBO Max’s top 5 for 20 different countries, including Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico. It is not available on HBO Max in the United States, though, but it is available to stream with a subscription on Prime Video.

While Love Hurts didn’t win over most critics, the action-packed comedy did resonate better with general audiences, and that continues to be the case with its streaming success eight months after the theatrical release. Quan in his first leading role is the main draw, but the other members of Love Hurts‘ cast give the movie further appeal, including Ariana DeBose, Daniel Wu, Marshawn Lynch, and Sean Astin.

Love Hurts delivers a Goonies reunion between Quan and Astin, with the latter playing Cliff, who is the boss of and mentor of Quan’s Marvin. The nostalgia between them, and Cliff even telling Marvin he is proud of him, makes their reunion even more impactful, especially with The Goonies 2 now in development.

As Love Hurts continues to climb the streaming charts, Quan’s next movie, Zootopia 2, where he voices Gary De’Snake, is all but guaranteed to be a box office hit. The first movie grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, and the sequel is releasing during Thanksgiving weekend, the same time when Disney’s Moana 2 had a dominant box office debut last year.
