Does ‘Black Phone 2’ Have a Post-Credits Scene?

Does ‘Black Phone 2’ Have a Post-Credits Scene?

Black Phone 2 has finally hit theaters, but does the sequel to the 2022 original leave room for more films, or is this truly the end for Ethan Hawke’s The Grabber? Set three years after the first film, Black Phone 2 follows siblings Finney (Mason Thames) and Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) as they are terrorized by The Grabber, who has returned from the dead in a Freddy Krueger-like spirit form. Since Black Phone 2 director Scott Derrickson previously worked on Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many fans might expect a post-credits scene teasing a third film.

Audiences don’t need to stick around through the credits of Black Phone 2, as once the movie is over, it’s over. Black Phone 2 does not have a mid- or post-credits scene. This is the same for the original The Black Phone, which did not have any sequel tease or post-credits scene.

How Does ‘Black Phone 2’ End?

Universal Pictures

Throughout Black Phone 2, Finney and Gwen discover more about the Grabber’s history. They find out he was actually named Wild Bill Hickok and was the co-worker of Finney and Gwen’s deceased mother, Hope (Anna Lore). Both worked at the Alpine Lake winter camp. The Grabber is also revealed to be the one who killed Hope. This recontextualizes the events of the first film as a more personal kidnapping than a random act.

With The Grabber’s spirit back from hell, Gwen and Finney realize that the only way to defeat him is to recover the three original victims he killed at Alpine Lake and hid beneath the ice. Gwen faces The Grabber in the dream world while Finney, their dad, Terrence (Jeremy Davies), camp counselor Armando (Demián Bichir), and Ernesto (Miguel Mora), the younger brother of one of The Grabber’s victims from the first film, look for the bodies in the real world. Once the bodies are unearthed, The Grabber’s powers begin to fade, and Gwen, along with help from the spirits of his original victims, kills The Grabber once and for all.

The film’s final scene sees Gwen return home and get a call on the titular Black Phone. On the other end is her mother, telling her how proud she is. Earlier in the film, Gwen learns that her mother had similar psychic powers. This reveals a family lineage for Gwen’s abilities and explains how Finney could use the Black Phone in the original film to communicate with the dead. It appears to be a trait that both siblings inherited from their mother.

With that, Black Phone 2 ends. There is no final jump scare or any hint that The Grabber might return for a third film. It appears the story is over. However, horror films have shown that no monster ever truly stays dead. The original The Black Phone seemed like a finished story with no hints at a sequel anywhere to be found, but following the impressive box office, it was given the green light for a sequel. If Black Phone 2 is another box office hit, a third movie could be in the cards. For now, Black Phone 2 brings the series to a fitting end and is playing in theaters.
