After a tough few weeks on the pitch, there is some tremendous news off the field for Newcastle United Women.
Wor Lasses have secured their own new training facility, moving to the £5.2m Newcastle University’s Cochrane Park sports facility.
The switch brings the women’s team closer geographically to the men’s and academy’s current training facilities, offering training, medical and player care spaces at Cochrane Park.
There has been some talk that the facility and surrounding area is big enough to be used as a possible sighting for a new stadium to house future games in the Women’s Super League 2.
However, this seems unlikely prospect given the location, particularly with United scoping out other avenues and locations to possibly build a new stadium and training facility for the whole Club that could incorporate a smaller sized ground for Wor Lasses.
Following the slightly disappointing but battling home 2 – 2 draw against Bristol City, it was a day of good news for NUFC Women on Tuesday with an international call-up and some superb news off the field.
Striker Oona Sevenius, who bagged her second goal in successive games against Bristol and who has 27 senior international caps to her name, has been named in the Finland senior squad ahead of their UEFA Women’s Nations League promotion/relegation matches against Denmark.
She will be joined on international duty by teammates Freya Godfrey, Jasmine McQuade and Charlotte Wardlaw who will be representing Scotland.
Forward Gregory is again part of the Scotland senior side which is set to face Morocco and Switzerland in back-to-back friendly matches in October.
Gregory, who has four caps to her name could add to that tally if she appears at Stade El Arbi Zaouli in Casablanca on Friday, 24th October. The Scots then face Switzerland at Dunfermline’s East End Park on Tuesday, 28th October.
McQuade, who was capped by England at under-23 level last term, has accepted a call up by Scotland Under-23s alongside Magpies teammate Charlotte Wardlaw for two games this month.
The duo have been named in Michael McArdle’s squad for the international challenge fixtures against Sweden at Stark’s Park in Kirkcaldy on Thursday, 23rd October and Italy at the Coverciano Training Centre in Florence on Monday, 27th October.
