October 10 – World Sevens Football (W7F) has confirmed Brazil’s Clube de Regatas do Flamengo and Mexico’s Club América as the first professional women’s teams to compete in its second global tournament at the end of the year.
To be held from December 5–7, 2025, at Beyond Bancard Field in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the seven-a-side event will feature eight clubs contesting a record $5 million prize pool.
The announcement is another step forward for W7F, which launched in Portugal earlier this year with the goal of ‘reimagining women’s football’ through a fast-paced, commercially driven format.
The inaugural edition in Escorial drew Some significant attention, featuring established players such as Pernille Harder, Kerolin Nicoli, Ella Toone, and Lily Yohannes – culminating in Bayern München lifting the trophy.
Flamengo – one of Brazil’s most storied footballing institutions – has built a strong women’s programme, winning multiple Campeonato Carioca titles and the national Série A1 championship.
Flamengo will be joined by two-time Liga MX Femenil champions Club América, representing Mexico. Similar to their Brazilian counterparts, the club already has a deep domestic following for their men’s teams which is starting to recognise their women’s teams.
The December edition will be broadcast globally through DAZN, extending to more than 100 digital platforms and including exclusive behind-the-scenes content across W7F’s media channels.
W7F’s organisers have positioned the competition as more than a sporting showcase. With substantial prize money and a strong media infrastructure, it’s intended to provide a sustainable commercial platform for a different angle of the women’s game – one that combines entertainment value with a significant economic opportunity.
Further participating clubs are expected to be announced in the coming weeks as W7F continues to build momentum toward its Fort Lauderdale event.
“It’s an incredible honor to bring Flamengo’s red and black to the World Sevens Football stage,” said André Rocha, General Manager of the Women’s Team at Flamengo. “This format highlights the best of the global women’s game, and we look forward to sharing the pitch with the world’s elite in Fort Lauderdale.
“Representing Brazil at this event is about more than competition—it’s a celebration of our club, our supporters, and our vision for the future of women’s football.”
“World Sevens Football is about more than just competition – it’s about creating a platform that inspires the next generation while celebrating the best in the game and paying these athletes a prize pool they deserve,” said Jen Mackesy, co-founder of W7F. “Bringing together powerhouse clubs like Club América and Flamengo shows how deeply the women’s game is resonating across continents and we can’t wait to share the others joining us in Fort Lauderdale this December!”
